애플 공동 창업자인 스티브 워즈니악이 애플의 폐쇄적인 수리정책에 대해 '쓴소리'를 쏟아냈다. 최근 미국에서는 소비자들이 '알아서 고칠 권리(Right to Repair)'를 강화하는 움직임이 계속되고 있어, 애플의 AS 정책에 변화를 가져올지 주목된다.
14일 CNN 등 외신에 따르면 스티브 워즈니악은 최근 '제품 자가 수리권(Right to Repair)' 지지자인 루이스 로스만이 운영하는 유튜브 채널에 나와 "소비자가 제품을 스스로 수리할 수 있는 권리를 갖도록 하는 것에 전적으로 찬성한다"며 이같이 밝혔다.
워즈니악은 스티브 잡스와 함께 애플을 공동 창업한 인물이다. 그는 특히 직접 TV를 수리하면서 컴퓨터의 미래를 설계한 젊은 엔지니어 시절의 경험을 소개하면서 "애플이 PC를 만들 수 있었던 것도 수리를 직접 할 수 있었기 때문"이라고 언급했다. 그는 "개방적 환경이 없었다면 애플도 탄생하지 못했을 것"이라며 "기업이 여러 제한을 거는 것은 단지 이를 통해 힘과 모든 것을 제어할 수 있는 권력을 얻기 위해서라고 생각한다"고 비판했다.
애플 아이폰 수리 모습 /사진=애플애플은 그동안 소비자들에게 '보안상의 위험을 초래한다'는 이유로 자사 제품 수리 서비스를 애플의 공식 지정업체에서만 받을 수 있게 해왔다. 만일 소비자가 제품을 직접 수리하거나 사설 수리점을 이용하면 보증기간을 무효화하는 등 불이익을 줬다. 하지만 공식 지정업체가 많지 않고 수리비가 비싸 소비자 불만이 계속돼왔다.
뿐만 아니라 애플은 부분 수리를 제한적으로 지원해 악명이 높았다. 화면 액정이 깨져도 제품 전체를 리퍼폰으로 교체받아야 했다. 전체 교체에 대한 비용 부담은 온전히 소비자 몫이다. 현재는 액정과 배터리에 대해서는 부분수리가 가능하도록 개선했지만 여전히 삼성전자 등 다른 제조사와 비교하면 비용 부담이 크다는 지적이다.
이 때문에 최근 미국에서도 애플의 AS 정책이 다시 도마 위에 올랐다. 조 바이든 미국 대통령이 지난 9일 '소비자의 수리권' 보장 방안이 담긴 행정명령에 서명하면서다. 휴대전화 제조사가 소비자에게 공식 AS센터 외에 사설 수리점 이용을 제한하는 것을 연방거래위원회(FTC)가 규제하는 내용이 핵심이다.
이번 행정명령은 바이든 대통령이 후보시절부터 내세웠던 아젠다 중 하나다. 미국 정부가 사실상 애플 AS정책을 개선하도록 강하게 드라이브를 걸면서 국내 이용자들의 혜택으로 이어질 수 있을지 주목된다.
