Baker Discusses 2020 Holyoke Soldiers' Home COVID Outbreak While Visiting Berkshires

4:51
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker answered questions about his administration’s handling of the deadly Holyoke Soldiers’ Home coronavirus outbreak that killed 77 residents while visiting Berkshire County on Wednesday.
Berkshire County lawmakers have told WAMC that they’ve read and reacted to the Globe’s reporting.
“I have seen the report and it is deeply concerning- What it reflects in terms of it failure in the chain of command, failure in communication, and the kind of insufficient staffing and the like, and really, as you've seen, quite a long list of things that went wrong and things that should have been confronted early on, and they just simply were not," said State Senator Adam Hinds, a Democrat from the Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden district. “We're very concerned and it clearly speaks for rapid reform. It's just absolute tragedy to think that the implications of those failures are so severe and so we need to hear more and learn more. And so I'm hoping that we'll have the governor come before the legislature and really continue to get to the bottom of this. Honestly, every time we do so, have another report or more hearings, we learn more. And so I hope that we'll continue to get to the bottom of this.”

Some mainstream media overemphasize bipartisanship, push outdated fears about debt and inflation in covering relief bill

In recent weeks, some mainstream media figures and outlets have pushed outdated arguments for austerity and misguided calls for bipartisanship in covering the  $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package — which is expected to clear Congress this week — putting the onus for GOP obstruction on Democrats and emphasizing debt and inflation concerns that economists say are unwarranted amid a historically devastating crisis.
Some in the media have emphasized the lack of Republican support for the relief bill, suggesting that Democrats should have done more to get GOP votes. Yet, the proposal -- which includes $1,400 stimulus checks, extended unemployment benefits, child allowances, state and local aid, and resources for vaccine distribution and health care -- has widespread, bipartisan support.  According to a recent poll by Politico and Morning Consult, 76% of voters approve of the bill, including 60% of Republicans. Polls have also indicated that voters favor a strong relief package over a more targeted bipartisanship measure by roughly 2-to-1.

President Biden seems determined to pass his “American Rescue Plan” without any Republican votes. It’s $1.9 trillion or bust, he says, on top of the unprecedented $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill from March and another $900 billion in December, some of which still hasn’t been spent. In fact, Republicans don’t have the clout to stop the bill. But the plan is also drawing some sharp criticism from non‐Republican sources. Two big articles in the Washington Post Thursday and Friday urged that the plan be pared back to presumably necessary measures, with other components to be considered through the normal non‐emergency congressional process of hearings and floor debate.

End of an era: Champion of programs for the poor retiring
At the start of his administration, Bill Clinton was strategizing with top economic advisers Bob Rubin and Gene Sperling. Rubin, who had been co-chair of Goldman Sachs, was no stranger to Washington but wondered: Who was this Bob Greenstein they kept citing?
On programs affecting poor people, Greenstein is the gold standard, they explained. "He really is," recalls Rubin, who has turned to Greenstein repeatedly over the ensuing quarter century.
