it s been five days since that massive earthque devastated haiti but tonight, more amazing stories of survive value and hope are emerging from the rubble. good sunday, everyone. i m craig melvin. the 7.0 magnitude quake virtually demolished the capitol city and killed an unimaginable number of people who lived there and many that were just visiting. it also has for ever changed the lives of the millions left behind. even today, rescuers continue to find victims alive and in good condition. jay gray got a first-hand look damage. we re live in port-au-prince, jay, good evening to you. reporter: this does not stop is effort because it s night fall. you hear the planes behind me and another plane planning as the recovery and relief effort continues. a visit to the heart of the city shows there s so much work to be done here. they are the faces of devastation and desperation. s in ruins of what is left of port-au-prince, survivors are being pushed to theirçó limits right now. there s no security. anything could go down at any time right now. reporter: they scramble for water. argue over the last drops of precious fuel and wonder how five days after the ground shifted so violently here, things are getting even worse. now it s getting worse. it has gotten worse. he turned his business into a make-shift morgue allowing friends to store the bodies of loved ones until they can find a casket. he understands their pain. i have lost my reporter: on the first sunday since the quake, many uncertain and worried about what will come next have turned to a higher power. all we can do is pray. reporter: they pray for health and hope and in the midst of all the pain and suffering here, these people wo who have lost so much give thanks, understanding, perhaps more than anyone, things could be even worse. now, there is a bit of good news coming in late today. word of two more survivors being pulled from the rubble. a worker at the offices here and a woman from florida at a local supermarket. in port-au-prince, haiti, i m jay gray, back to you. thanks so much. meanwhile, back here at home, many spent their sunday in a place of worship praying for those who have been left homeless or those who have lost loved ones in port-au-prince. one service going on at the national cathedral and darcy is live there. good evening, darcy. reporter: gooevening, craig, services got under way a few minute ago and they re offering prayers as well as music for victims and their families. as you said, all across the area churches reached out trying to lift up the people of haiti. at sacred heart catholic church in northwest washington, there s a sense of relief among parishioners. the father, who would normally lead the service is in haiti. he s been among the missing until friday when members found out he had been found safe. this member says she talked to him on saturday. he is outside. sleeping outside, also. he doesn t have a place. the capitol is really down. everything. reporter: it s the first time this church family has gotten together for mass since the deadly quake struck. many here are dealing with the pain of losing loved ones. my family die. reporter: the charge diocese is taking up money for charities to help people who are suffering in port-au-prince. today we have thanks giving for the families that have been found and father who has been found and pray for those that are still missing and those who have died and they ll be with god or they ll be found. reporter: here at the national cathedral, they will also take up a special fund today to benefit the episcopalian relief fund. those money also go to fooding with shelter, water, medicine and other things to help the haitian people get back on their feet. i m darcy spencer reporting live. back to you. darcy, thank you. fairfax county s urban search and rescue team is working to the point of exhaustion to save lives in haiti. so far, the northern virginia team has saved 14 people who were trapped. the 29 year old woman you see on the stretcher was pulled from the rubble of a university building. she had been trapped for more than four days. one of the fairfax rescuers says that all of the anxiety and physical pain disappears when they can safely return someone to their loved ones. that big balloon of pressure that you ve had, it s all the air has all gone out of that balloon. now the fatigue has hit you and you re just exhausted. time is running out for many still trapped an the fairfax team say they are holding out hope they can save even more lives today. on the eve of martin luther king jr. day president obama stopped by a d.c. church this morning to pay tribute. the obamas attended service at vermont avenue baptist today. during the service he talked about the difficulties that americans faced during the days of segregation and dr. king s movement against it. the president said dr. king s legacy should serve as a reminder to every american, never lose hope. don t give up on voting. don t give up on advocacy. don t give up on activism. there s too many needs to be met. too much work to be done. the president also added the challenges we face today like the recession, are as serious as the ones faced in the days of dr. king. after church, the president headed to massachusetts to campaign for democrat, martha coakley. coakley is vying for the seat held for decades by the late senator ted kennedy. the race is tight in massachusetts and that could spell trouble for democrats and president obama s health care bill. polls show that republican scott brown is leading and that could mean a crucial vote against health care but if brown wins the seat the white house says it will consider having the house pass the senate s version of the health care bill to avoid a new vote in the senate. still ahead, a local calf tests positive for rabies and it may have put hundred of area school children at risk. an urgent health warnings. and washingtonians, the reports continue to pour in. and the white house party crashers take on vegas. chuck bell, what you got? more rain before a some sunshine comes back. hakim, what s going on in sports. coming up, a local kid plays big against georgetown and brett favre dominates dallas and, the cats attack the flyers early and often at home. today the haitian embassy was inundated with donations from pple that wanted to help. right now the donations are still pouring in and creating a traffic backup along massachusetts avenue. that s where we find news4 derrick ward. reporter: the embassy of haiti was one drop-off point in the district for a time it was probably if busiest but traffic clogging massachusetts avenue. a steady stream of clothes, food stuffs and even medical sflies and they crowded the embassy building or being loaded on to a truck to be stored before being shipped to the caribbean nation. food, medical supplies, once again, we re hearing news here that the physicians in haiti do not have basic supplies. penicillin, for instance, is at a critical shortage right now. some donations came on a corporate level. we d like to be around for the community that we serve. the citizens in this country, and we d also like to be prepared to assist others that are not here in their time of need. others like those from this family who was in the dominican republic when the quake hit think of a more personal nature. we re, america, greatest country in the world. if we can help, you know, then everybody will follow. reporter: it s encouraging to see this sort of support for haiti in these days initially after the earthquake. what authorities are hoping is that this sort of interest can be kept up because the job in haiti is far in done. in fact, it s just begun. haiti s yes, ma am to the u.s. calls for a marshall plan for haiti. we have to stop the looting right away. not in the same way as before. reporter: derrick ward, news4. the greater washington haiti relief committee organized the aids drive at the embassy today and the group will be among the responders of teams of doctors and other professionals headed to haiti in the coming days to get the donations to those that need them. washington s party crashers hosting their own party in sin city, no less. and back here, a rainy, dreary sunday. what s the work week look maryland healthñi officials put out an urgent warning for anyone who may have come into contact with a rabid cat. the health department says a cat living at the hard bargain farm environmental center located off bryant point road has rabies. school age children visited that area and they are now asking that anyone who may have been in contact with the calf since september 21st to call them. meanwhile, it s been euthanized. crowds are gathering to see the glitz, glamour and hollywood s best tonight. there it is, a live look. pictures of celebrities arriving on the red carpet for the 67th that s the reason why. not much wind so that was a little bit of good news. at least it wasn t blowing raindrops in your face. temperatures made it only up into the low 40s today. 44 the high after a 37-degree start. 44 the current temperature. so far two-thirds of an inch of rain at reagan international and more in some other locations. up and down the eastern seaboard, 30s and 40s here in mid-atlantic coast and much warmer along the southeast coast. 63 in jacksonvile and 74 in miami, florida. the rain is not quite done yet. the first push of rain has now lifted through but the upper level low behind it as it still yet has to come through the area so it will continue the wrap the moisture around the mainrea of low pressure and that means another shot of rain coming our way. here it is on regional doppler. here s the washington area. this batch is moving north bound. from fredericksburg to richmond and lower southern maryland that first patch of rain is coming your way shortly. this area across the mountains of west virginia, that has to pinwheel its way around so we re in store for anoer batch of rain. probably between a quarter inch and half inch of rain on the way between now and the time you wake up tomorrow morning. rainfall amounts, two-thirds here and a little over an inch in frederick, maryland. half an inch in winchester. and in yawn okay about half an inch. and a shot of rain coming our way and most of it will be done by 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning at the latest and by 8:00, the low pressure will pull away and draws in the dry air and that brings sunshine back into our skies by late morning to around lunchtime tomorrow. cooler weather on the way for the middle of the week with unsettled weather as well. so get ready for cloud cover. evening temperatures won t move too much. cloudy skies through most of the overnight hours and into early time tomorrow. wake-up temperatures in the upper 30s and damp and most of the rain will be gone. the seven-day forecast shows sunshine for tomorrow but clouds coming back into the forecast as we get toward tuesday with a high near 50 after a 52-degree start to the high tomorrow. another chance for passing showers roll into the forecast for wednesday, thursday and that s probably going to link near friday as well. i m optimistic that saturday will be dry and another chance for rain
