with heavy flooding. residents at the orlando area nursing homes were among hundreds rescued after floodwaters started to rise this morning. joining us now from orlando is nbc news correspondent jim seekers. jesse, what is the situation there at this hour? >> at this point lawrence, we are still dealing with communities that are at least partially submerged. that's hard to see because it's dark behind me. you can see those yellow reflective signs. those are street signs that have polls obviously attached to them, but right now they just look like they are floating in the water because they are still dealing with the community that is flooded out. we have seen the water level recede ever so slightly over the last eight hours. that has happened at a snail's pace even though it has largely been dry this afternoon and evening. that shows how much water has

those are street signs that are barely above water and it has receded a little bit, just inches over the last several hours that we've been out here. even though the wind is largely gone, it's been pretty much dry out here all afternoon and evening, the water is still not fully receding in this neighborhood. this area alone according to officials, had around 30 people rescued today. that gives you an idea, this is just one neighborhood. according to officials, this evening we are still looking at upwards of 100,000 customers in this county without power. thankfully, it is cool out, so people aren't necessarily going to be relying on air conditioning in the same way that they may have if it were hot in the aftermath of the storm. thankfully officials are saying that water is running in all of these communities in this orlando area. so hopefully people are still getting access to clean drinking water even though they may be in the dark, maybe trying to figure out if food is spoiling at home. of course, when you have this

be careful because there are gators in this water. we are out with lieutenant fernando. they have been going in, at least 150 rescues from this area for folks. >> at least 200 starting this morning. >> you don't know what is under the water. >> absolutely not. part of the issues we had is navigating the waters even though we know we are in a neighborhood and the streets dictate where we go, we have hidden mailboxes. >> there are street signs here. some are covered and others peeking out of the top here. this area is prone to flooding but it has gotten more water this time. >> this is the highest that it ever has been.

end you know it's going to wear down the tree canopies, peoples roofs, the street signs. that's why you're seeing more and more debris litter the streets because of everything being worn down by the wind. so we have a lot of gauges that are now out. they reported well over 120 mile per hour winds where randy is multiple times throughout the day as this storm continues to venture off to the north and east. their conditions should start to improve within the next hour or two, but you're going to see the center portion of the state dealing with those hurricane force winds, the torrential rain for the next several hours throughout the nighttime hours. and then, anderson, a lot of these places down across southwest florida we haven't been able to get to, when we see first light tomorrow, we finally start to get helicopters in the sky looking at aerials over these areas i think we're going to be shocked at some of the damage we're going to see tomorrow. >> do you have a sense what

the caloosahatchee river in particular. >> absolutely. and so those those, you know, storm surge came through there. there's still some residual flooding and residual waters. we actually have our military vehicle that our police department actually utilizes and that's out there. and that's what we're utilizing to be a water recovery is able to actually get through, you know, roughly about four or five feet of water. and that's what we're using, utilizing to get to our residents. so it's still a lot of flooding. there's still a lot of trees down. there's still a lot of, you know, power lines, street and street signs. there's a lot of damage that actually has taken place that we're trying to mitigate even in these dark conditions. >> what's the overall temperature of the residents there in fort myers? our folks, you know, kind of kind of dealing with it with maybe a smile on their face, or is it a little more grim is tough. you know.

people on the move, that have been trying to get to higher ground. you're talking about all the alignment, the roads that are congested, these things compounding, creating this emergency for the entire state of florida. meanwhile we still have hours more of this chaos left. i'm essentially in a suburb of fort myers right now. it's about 10 minutes this direction to downtown fort myers. i-75 is two minutes to my right. we've not seen the storm surge here. boy, are we seeing the effects of the wind and the relentless rain. this is a piece of a road sign from colonial boulevard that came from the streets you see behind me here. there were plenty of traffic signals that were on the roads over here. all of those street signs, those traffic signals, have blown down. when they crashed down into the strata, the wind just pushes them out of the way, like their toys. we still have branches coming down even as we speak.
