I also want to say thank you Madison Public Library for taking this event on when it was unsure whether someone would and for giving us this beautiful space to keep putting on the fence for the public in medicine and just in where you came from today. Best selling books. What makes a good story, in your minding . What do you look for . Guest so theres no formula. I dont actually think that. The question you just asked me ive never really asked myself exactly. What leads me to want to write a book, because theyre a pain in the neck to do. You really have to have a level of passion about it. That its finding, usually what it is if i look back on it, its finding a person, an interesting person in an interesting situation that will allow me to explore some interesting ideas, and thats it. And what almost always happens is that ive got lots of little projects bubbling along, magazine pieces or things im investigating, and something becomes so interesting, it consumes me, and i get to the point in my head where i think, wow, this is such a good story, i have an obligation to tell it. You are still fighting the fight with this book. But just for folks who dont know what you did back in the day, you made history. You changed the course of the aids epidemic. It was an extraordinary time, cheryl, as you know, because you covered a lot of what happened and did a lot of the interviews. But we had a new disease that was unknown cause. At first, the thought was that it affected only gay men. But then, in a short time, it became evident that this affected women and children, and that was my part. I was a pediatrician. We were doing immunologic tests, and within six months of michael gottliebs discovery of aids, we found women and children who had the same symptomatology and we felt that they were also aids. So it told us that this was being transmitted probably by a virus we didnt know what the virus was in 81, 82 and that it was transmitted by blood transfusions, which we found the first case of here in san francisco, and then from mothers to infants.
