Want to see congress focusing on impeachment or policy issues? overwhelmingly two-thirds of voters said they wanted congress to focus on the issues come up on policies. the irony is this has been a pretty productive week for congress setting aside impeachment. at the usmca is going to pass the house of representatives today on the really big budget deal that did a lot on tax extenders and funded a lot of priorities for both parties, that s not getting much attention. instead it s all the impeachment stuff which most voters at least in the battleground states are turned off on. and it really motivates republicans which is reflected in the fund-raising numbers. dana: i was listening to a podcast where they had a republican and a democrat debating the issue of impeachment and it was interesting. two people could have that different reaction to all of this so we will continue to cover that. alex conan, thank you. democratic congresswoman tulsi gabbard is on the defense after taking a shooting position

Education, you borrow money. found $556 billion of the deficit, 58% of it can be traced to recent bills including the 2015 tax extenders. the doc fix. the 2017 tax law. that s the part in blue there. and the bipartisan budget act of 2018. so this is an incidental. this isn t the president saying, hey, we had some kind of weird economic downturn. this is deliberate. this is self-imposed. this is really fiscal self-sabotage. that s what s happening and on both sides of the budget. so we have a he had a huge tax cut that put nearly $2 trillion more to the debt. it s a big chunk of what s adding to the deficit this year, alone. and we followed that with two massive spending increases. again, both of what the president signed when he said he wasn t going to be growing spending nearly as much as he was there. this is self-imposed. it does make sense to borrow when you have an economic

Surveillance and the proposed eight-year authorization. a number of which said that s not such a good idea, given some of the outrages we ve seen of late, fbi and other. let s trim that in. so i think you have intention between long-term authorizations that authorize a program for a long time and a yearly appropriation process that causes this congress to look under the hood at what s working and what s not working. think, like chip, it s important to look under the hood, because some states do a good job of administering programs like this, others don t. we heard from speaker ryan yesterday before the house before both chambers passi s pat tax plan, and the speaker admitted that no one really knows whether this is a tax plan that s going to pay for itself over ten years. do you share that sentiment? yes, you don t have the exact amount. i mean, think you can certainly wheel back from the 1.5 trillion that was the budget window. i mean, there s about a half a trillion dollars of tax extenders in there.

Cuts. if those are extended, that will add another $2 trillion to the debt. and if you look at what congress has to do this week, in trying to repair sequester in dealing with disaster funding, in dealing with funding for c.h.i.p., as well as other tax extenders, that could add almost another $1 trillion to the national debt. so we are on the path towards a national debt that could very well reach 100% of gdp. which would really be a disaster from a fiscal point of view. certainly would be. all right, mr. secretary, as usual, thanks so much for joining us. really appreciate it. you re welcome. just ahead, we ll get an update on that deadly train derailment as ntsb investigators are now rushing to the scene. and we ll also talk more about the president s new national security strategy and whether it s at odds with his personal views when it comes to russia.

After the bush tax cuts where every year literally hundreds of billions of dollars in tax extenders happen at the end of every year. right. so it s a cynical ploy. ezra, when you do the math on this stuff, it adds to bigger deficits unless you believe the president and gary coen and steve mnuchin and others saying no, no. this will unleash violently explosive growth to take care of all of this. people s wages are going to go up. unemployment to go down. lower than it is. the economy s going to grow at numbers that india and china see because this is going to be so stimulative to the economy. i can t get those numbers the add up. nobody believes that math. and even if you look at reasonably optimistic estimates nobody believe it is math and we have been in a scenario now as a country with extremely high corporate profits so the primary thing this tax bill is trying to do in the world and make sure
