Burlington schools report zero COVID-19 cases this week

Burlington’s caseload of positive COVID-19 counts dropped slightly over the past week, with one new school case reported Friday, March 5 at Fox Hill Elementary.
Starting March 11, teachers, early educators and school staff members will be able to sign up for COVID-19 vaccine appointments through the state's 170 vaccination sites and mass vaccination sites plan to block off certain days to vaccinate educators, Gov. Charlie Baker said March 3.
The governor's announcement came as Baker and Education Commissioner Jeff Riley push for full-time, in-person education at all Massachusetts elementary schools by next month. Burlington public schools have had in-person elementary education since the beginning of the school year. Superintendent Eric Conti told the Burlington School Committee last week that the district was preparing for a full return to in-person education in September.

The Latest: Tennessee probe finds wasted vaccines

The Latest: Tennessee probe finds wasted vaccines
By The Associated PressFebruary 23, 2021 GMT
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than 2,400 doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Tennessee’s most populous county went to waste over the past month while local officials sat on tens of thousands of shots that they thought had already gone into arms, the state’s top health official announced Tuesday.
The finding comes after the Department of Health launched an investigation over the weekend into a report that recent winter storms caused 1,000 doses to be tossed in Shelby County, which encompasses Memphis.
But Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey on Tuesday revealed that the problems were far more widespread. She said issues dating back to Feb. 3 included multiple incidents of spoiled doses, an excessive vaccine inventory, insufficient record-keeping and a lack of a formal process for managing soon-to-expire vaccines. A federal investigation is also expected.

Welllesley's superintendent wants info. on vaccinations for educators

Katie Lannan/State House News Service
Wellesley Townsman
The state's education commissioner wants elementary school students back in the classroom full-time in April, part of a plan to phase out remote learning that officials announced Tuesday as Massachusetts approaches the one-year anniversary of the initial March 2020 school closures intended to mitigate spread of COVID-19.
To that, Wellesley's superintendent has a "yes, but..."  response.
The  announcements met  pushback from the state's largest teachers union, which has been calling for earlier vaccine access for educators, and from school committees, which said decisions involved in reopenings are best handled locally.
We wish the governor's announcement had been coupled with a definitive timeline for educator vaccinations, which we sincerely hope will begin in the month of March.  Many states are ahead of Massachusetts in this regard."  Superintendent David Lussier
