Google reveals pilot program for Duplex-powered shopping and food delivery

Google reveals pilot program for Duplex-powered shopping and food delivery
Today Google gave us a small status update on its snazzy Assistant-powered Duplex technology, which leverages AI for conversational applications — of which there are
tons. Although much of the company's discussion reiterated things it's already done, like rolling out Duplex to check for updated hours in these "new-normal" times, it did reveal a new pilot program.
As part of the summary announcement, Google went back over all the things Duplex has accomplished, like check for updated business hours and the new Hold For Me feature on the company's latest Pixels. While Duplex has been able to book tables at restaurants and buy movie tickets for a while, the company has also revealed that it's piloting a program for more general shopping and even ordering food. Details are lacking, but as an unfortunate GrubHub addict (who still laments the death of Foodler), I can't wait.

Google Pay now supports Washington DC Metro travel passes

Google Pay now supports Washington DC Metro travel passes
Google has been working hard to expand the utility of Google Pay, not just across thousands of banks, but for more types of transactions. One of these is public transit payments and passes, previously available in select cities in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, Russia, and Ukraine. Today Google is adding support for the transit system of the United States capital, Washington DC.
Metro riders can now load their SmarTrip cards into Google Pay, using it at NFC-equipped train stations, busses, and public parking lots. Users can re-up prepaid balances or pay for a monthly unlimited pass. Metro notes that the payment functionality is supported on phones only, so no NFC-equipped Wear OS watches are invited to the party.

Google Fuchsia OS is ready for release

Google Fuchsia OS is ready for release
Chris Burns - May 25, 2021, 9:30am CDT
Today Google announced that their operating system Fuchsia OS is ready for prime time. They’ll be releasing the software for the first-gen Nest Hub first, followed by a whole bunch of other devices in the near future. UPDATE: If you own a first-generation Nest Hub, you could be getting the update to Fuchsia OS as soon as today!*
If you use your Nest Hub all the time and are worried about functionality changes – don’t worry! The update to Fuchsia OS shouldn’t affect the way the device works from a user perspective. As confirmed by 9to5Google, the experience should be “essentially identical.” It’ll be a point at which Fuchsia OS is confirmed to bring a 100% stable and just-as-good-or-better experience to Google devices that we’ll start to see functionality that differs from what’s already present on said devices.

Today Google held the first day of its annual developer conference, Google IO, and kicked things off with the keynote like it does every year.
To get the ball rolling for all of its fun, exciting announcements to come, Google CEO Sundar Pichai came on stage to talk about the company and its recent and future efforts to improve on anything and everything from privacy to global connection to Google Translate.
Once things got into more specific announcements, there were quite a few major points for Google to talk about. It wouldn’t be Google IO after all if Google had nothing to show off. One of the first major announcements was the arrival of the Android 12 beta.

Google says it's 'likely' some employees will return to the office in April

Today Google informed employees that it is planning to allow some employees back into offices next month.
The New York Times reported on an email that said "it is likely we’ll begin to welcome Googlers back to some of our U.S. offices on a voluntary basis."
The company told
The Verge that specifics of reopening will depend on "specific criteria that include increases in vaccine availability and downward trends in COVID-19 cases." However, it is not requiring employees to get vaccinated. Last spring Google was notable among companies that sent employees home, providing an allowance to buy necessary equipment. At one point it considered reopening offices as early as last July, but the spreading pandemic quickly changed that; offices have since remained mostly shuttered.

No Google Doodle for Frank Sinatra's 100th Birthday

Font Size
On November 19, 2014 Google commemorated the 57th birthday of Ofra Haza with a Google Doodle. Who?
Also in 2014, Google Doodle honored the 151st birthday of Annie Jump Cannon. Who?
A few days after that, Wassily Kandinsky was similarly recognized with a Google Doodle on his 148th birthday. Who?
Well today is the 100th birthday of Frank Sinatra so obviously Google Doodle must honor Ol' Blue Eyes. If you thought that you would be wrong. Relative nonentities receive honors from Google but when it comes to a major cultural icon on his 100th birthday, they amazingly chose to ignore him.  Truly pathetic. To get an idea of how Frank Sinatra changed the world, let us read this column by David Lehman, author of
