Horse-drawn carriages, trolleys and more: Here’s what Staten Island roadways looked like back in the day
Updated May 10, 2021;
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Before there were potholes and traffic, there were horse-drawn carriages and trolley tracks on the streets of Staten Island.
The borough’s roadways have gone through a drastic change over the years, from the construction of Staten Island’s expressways to paving over its dirt roads.
But perhaps the biggest change to the borough’s traffic flow came after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was built.
We have the proof. Here are the best throwback photos of what Staten Island streets used to look like.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Since we all know that Travis is famous for the Fourth of July parade, we have chosen a few vintage “then” photos not usually in the forefront.
A little history: Travis was a battle site during the Battle of Staten Island, and ferries ran from Travis in 1757 and were part of Philadelphia and New York City’s main route via the Port Richmond Ferry for decades.

But, don’t celebrate too soon, forecasters warn.
Instead, keep in mind that March can be a tumultuous month, and in the past it has delivered powerful punches of unpredictable weather here in New York City.
“That’s the tricky part about this time of year,’' said David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “It can be deceiving when you get some mild weather, but we’re not too far from where these colder air masses come from in Canada. You can still get a snowstorm if the timing is right and the conditions are favorable.’'

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As catering halls in New York City remain closed, we think fondly of family celebrations and festive large gatherings of yesteryear. In those nostalgic moments, long-time residents of the borough might recall Bill Francis of The Bill Francis Band. The native Staten Islander and former Silver Lake resident certainly remembers what he dubs as “The Golden Age” of live music at banquets and weddings.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Whenever a major snowstorm heads for Staten Island, children — and some parents — make the trek to the borough’s best hills to go sledding.
A massive snowstorm is approaching New York City on Wednesday into Thursday, and it’s expected to dump up to 12 inches of the white powder across the five boroughs, including Staten Island. The snow will be wet, heavy snow, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys previously told the Advance/SILive.com.
