On a known route would indicate that it s a commercial airplane doing what it was supposed to do. what is the normal way of identifying itself and having a communication, let s say, with russian authorities? the first and foremost would be the four-digit code that is being broadcast by the transponder. in addition, the pilots will talk to air traffic control prior to entering a country s air space and to receive formal permission to enter. that s granted, contingent on the route filed with the air traffic controllers and they have radio communication. if there s any ambiguity about what s going on. okay. john cox, an aviation expert for nbc and msnbc. thank you so much. i know you ll continue to stand by check with your resources as well. jane harman, head of the wilson ....

Environment and cost containment is an issue. they may have figured that they didn t want to spend the extra money for the fuel to go around it. simple as that? that s exactly it. it would be a financial decision? that s right. and what kind of measures can a pilot take? i mean, on an aircraft of this sophistication there is a tcat system that would automate in the cockpit, traffic, traffic, traffic. i would assume if there is an incoming missile they would have had some kind of knowledge that something was close to their airspace and it would be recorded on the black boxes. captain bunn, what about that? not the tcas. military aviation has what that s not what it picks up. it picks up the transponder which is the signal that we use to send signals about our identification, our speed and ....

Down. malaysian airlines confirming they lost contact with the flight over ukraine some time ago. david, i want to bring you in again. i asked you this question before but wonder if we can get more elaboration about what is standard operating procedure about flying over these conflict zones? well, the primary thing is that the identification of the aircraft has to be completely clear and when it is, it should not be involved in the conflict in any way whatsoever because of its altitude, where it s operating, it shouldn t be confused as a cargo plane, confused as anything else, because of the fact that its identification. remember, that identification comes from the transponder and the transponder is the same thing we had troubles with mh-370 when it went off. i m not trying to say it s the same problem because we have no information that says that at this point. but we need to be cognizant of the fact that is the way even military radar can identify that ....

indeed. quickly to you, jim tillman, as a former pilot. accident is a cogent explanation. the flight pattern, the size of this kind of aircraft is readily apparent from the ground or is there something about the altitude that a plane like this would fly that would be in any way similar to a it intoer jet or a military aircraft? no, not at all. the fact that you have avionics on the 777 to let the ground know who they are, where they are going, their speed and direction, all of that information is available real-time to the transponder. i agree it could be an accident, maybe someone with a nervous trigger. we re going to have continuing coverage of the downed mh-17. justin green still with me, jack ....

Inspector, author of why planes crash. i want to talk about the geography again. that is one of the very few details we have now. eastern ukraine near russia. obviously an area where there is conflict right now. we know in our history sometimes commercial airlines get caught in international conflict. the korean airlines flight shot down by the soviet union comes to mind here. what kind of precautions are in place to keep this from happening? well, in that part of the region, in that region there really are not a lot of things to prevent this from happening because they re not interacted like we are here in the united states where the military and the civilian radar are shared, sometimes sitting right next to each other in the control areas. so that s not the way it is over there. so we talk a lot about it in the malaysian airlines about the fact that the transponder went off-line and the transponder identifies the course, which aircraft it is. ....
