Nominations were accepted for dozens of categories throughout the school year. Our committee narrowed the nominees down to five finalists in each category, then winners of the awards were decided by more than 40,000 votes.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A Indoor Track and Field State Championship saw a pair of first-time winners atop the podium for team state championships. The Swain County Maroon Devils won the program's first women's Indoor State Championship while the Raptors from Mountain Island Charter won their school's first team State Championship in Indoor Track on the men's side.

The 2020-2021 school year was anything but normal. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, the sports schedules were changed, seasons were shortened, and athletics were disrupted. HighSchoolOT Honors presented by Crabtree aims to recognize all that is good in high school sports though. On Thursday evening, winners of 37 different awards were named 36 of them voted on by the public, and a Lifetime Achievement Award winner selected by the HighSchoolOT staff. Public nominations were accepted throughout the school year. At the end of the year, the HighSchoolOT staff narrowed the nominees down to five finalists in each category. Then, over the course of a few weeks, the public was allowed to vote for the winners.
