(Bloomberg) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan fired his trade minister in an attempt to mitigate the damage from growing accusations of widespread nepotism in the government.
Ruhsar Pekcan was sacked on Wednesday with a midnight decree by Erdogan after she allegedly favored her husband’s company in government tenders. The president named Mehmet Mus, a parliamentary whip of his ruling AK Party, as her replacement.

Turkish trade minister subject of corruption allegations

Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan has found herself at the centre of allegations of corruption after news website Oda TV accused her and her husband of winning contracts to supply thousands of litres of disinfectant to her own ministry.
Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) called on Pekcan to explain whether her ministry and related institutions procured 9 million liras ($1.1 million) of the disinfectant from a company she owns.
Pekcan has failed to answer questions on the incriminating claims for the past two days, said Ali Öztunç, deputy head of the CHP’s parliamentary group, in a video message published by the Anka news agency.

Turkish authorities announced Monday they are expanding an ongoing investigation into allegations of human trafficking leveled against a local municipality run by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), adding to mounting public anger over endemic corruption and a weakening economy.
The municipality organized tours to European countries for people who wanted to leave the country, providing them with special visa-exempt passports in exchange for large sums of money, in what opposition lawmakers charge is a state-sponsored illegal migration scheme.

ANKARA, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Turkey and the United Kingdom extended their free-trade deal on Tuesday, days before Britain formally leaves the European Union, to keep up the existing flow of goods.
The trade ministers of the two countries signed the agreement in a televised videoconference call. It takes effect on Jan. 1, 2021, ensuring a quick transition after the existing deal ends at the end of the year, Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan said.
British trade minister Liz Truss has said that she was hopeful a bespoke deal between the countries could be struck soon.
