Happiness of Centenarians a Severely Neglected Area of Research
A systematic review by researchers at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA), UNSW Sydney has highlighted the need for clearer definitions of ‘happiness’, ‘life satisfaction’ and ‘positive affect’ in centenarians. This is the first systematic review to summarise the literature on the subjective wellbeing of this unique age group.
The review, published in Aging & Mental Health, identified 18 studies that followed patients from several weeks to 18 years and looked at subjective wellbeing, comprising a cognitive component and an affective component.
The cognitive component is represented as ‘life satisfaction’ and the affective or mood component defined in relation to a person’s immediate emotional state.

As the SEC investigates social media posts for GameStop manipulation, UNSW Business School’s Mark Humphery-Jenner says it is important to remember that market manipulation is illegal.
Famed GameStop investor ‘Roaring Kitty’ was recently hit with a securities-fraud lawsuit for his role in GameStop’s surge. The litigation alleges (amongst other things) that he manipulated the stock price and that he misrepresented himself as an amateur investor when in reality he was a licensed broker.
The meteoric rise of stocks such as GameStop has raised awareness of financial markets, with the likes of late-night hosts talk about people trading to “spank the Wall Street big boys”, presumably by forcing stock prices to move in a specific way. But, this risks encouraging behaviour that is straight illegal through market manipulation.

Now is the time to think about sustainable, evidence-based mental health programs that will serve Australians as we confront the mental fallout of the pandemic in 2021 and beyond.

UNSW History Professor under pressure to reject Israeli award

Eminent international researchers are calling on an Australian historian to refuse a controversial Israeli award.
In a highly unusual instance of global pressure, over 220 international and Australian academics have written an open letter to UNSW Laureate Professor of History, Alison Bashford, appealing to her to support the Palestinian call to boycott Israeli academic institutions by rejecting the US$1million 2021 Dan David prize, which she is sharing with two other researchers.
The academics’ letter says that accepting this year’s prize, which rewards Professor Bashford’s contributions to the understanding of public health, ‘serves to legitimize and normalize Israel’s colonial violence and apartheid’ against Palestinians. The letter points out the irony of an award for public health from a country actively blocking the delivery of vaccines to the five million Palestinians living under its control in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Garvan and UNSW Sydney researchers will establish and lead an innovative pancreatic cancer clinical trial program, thanks to a $3.75 million grant from the Cancer Institute NSW.
A national clinical trial program will test promising new targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancers of which more than 3000 cases are diagnosed annually in Australia alone.
The clinical trial program (MoST-P), led by researchers and clinicians at UNSW Sydney and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, will provide patients with access to either targeted therapies matched to the genomic signature of their individual tumour, or targeted to the tumour environment.
