LAHORE:The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed an appeal of the Punjab government and upheld a decision of the Punjab Service Tribunal about provision of allowances to the Secondary School Teachers (SSTs) from the date of their initial appointment as contract employees.
Representing the government’s appeal, Additional Advocate General Rana Shamshad Khan argued that the order of the tribunal had multiple legal flaws. He said the tribunal’s order, if implemented, would cause a huge burden on the national exchequer as there were over hundred thousand in the province. Headed by Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik, a two-judge bench observed that apparently the government wanted to pay a salary to the teachers what they were getting 10 years ago. ....

THE Office of Cebu City Prosecutor upheld the recommendation of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) 7 to file murder charges against Ret. Col. Edwin Layese for his alleged participation as the mastermind and/or contractor of the shooting incident that killed lawyer Joey Luis Wee.
Lawyer Rennan Augustus Oliva, NBI 7 director, said they received a copy of the case information dated Jan. 29, 2021, on Monday afternoon, Feb. 1.
He said this is a very good development and said even the petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus filed by Layese s counsel was denied by the court. Writ of Habeas Corpus is used to bring a detainee before the court to determine if his detention is lawful. ....

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the decision of the Federal Service Tribunal, declaring the daily wages service period of regular teachers of the federal capital as pensionable service.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, heard the 19 appeals, filed by the federal government challenging the FST decision.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed took strong exception to the attitude of the federal government meted out with the teachers that worked on the basis of daily wages.
What law allows more than 10 years of working on daily wages,” the CJP remarked. Teachers should not be compelled to work on the basis of daily wages, he added. The chief justice further noted that after regularising the services of these teachers they should not be deprived of their legal right. ....

EDINBURGH: Five judges at Scotland’s highest court of criminal appeal on Friday upheld the conviction of the only man found guilty of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing after a posthumous legal challenge.
The family of former Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, which brought the case, said they were heartbroken at the decision, their lawyer Aamer Anwar said.
They will apply to appeal to the UK Supreme Court within 14 days, he added. The ruling at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh comes just over 32 years after what remains Britain’s worst terrorist attack, with long-held doubts about Megrahi’s involvement. ....
