TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Women’s Basketball plays in its regular-season home finale on Thursday vs. No. 22 Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center on the ACC Network. The event will be Senior Night, where FSU will honor five seniors starting at 5:41 p.m.
The five seniors being honored include guards Tiana England, Bianca Jackson, Morgan Jones, Kourtney Weber and forward Valencia Myers.
The Seminoles (14-12, 8-8) and Yellow Jackets (19-8, 10-6) meet for the second time this season, as Georgia Tech squeaked past FSU in the first matchup, 68-64. FSU’s 64 points scored were the most allowed by Georgia Tech’s vaunted defense up to that point of the season, and FSU held a seven-point lead with 3:54 remaining before the Yellow Jackets came back to win.
After enduring injuries and players missing time due to COVID-19 protocols, FSU’s matchup vs. Georgia Tech on Jan. 13 was its first time having a full roster available in conference play. The result was the Seminoles out-scoring the Yellow Jackets off the bench, 29-12, and out-rebounding one of the nation’s most physical teams, 36-33.
Securing another Top 25 NET win would be key for Florida State’s NCAA Tournament candidacy. The Yellow Jackets enter Thursday night’s game ranked 23rd in the NET, while FSU is 52nd. FSU owns a Top 25 NET victory over No. 18 Notre Dame, defeating the Fighting Irish, 70-65, on Feb. 6 at home.
With 966 career points, senior guard Morgan Jones is 34 points shy of becoming the 39th Seminole to eclipse 1,000 career points. Due to last year’s shortened season that was just 19 games, Jones has only played in 109 career games. This season she is averaging a career-best 14.6 points, more than the 12.8 points she averaged last year in what was an All-America junior season.
The last Seminole to eclipse 1,000 career points was Kiah Gillespie, who achieved the feat in FSU’s ACC Semifinal win vs. top-seeded Louisville on March 7, 2020. Gillespie became the 38th Seminole in the 1,000-point club.
FSU has an opportunity to reach double-digit ACC wins yet again. Excluding the 2020-21 year when all ACC games weren’t available, the Seminoles have enjoyed a six-year run of 10 or more ACC victories from 2014-20. Two more wins this week would secure a seventh straight season in a full conference year.
Florida State looks to snap a five-game losing skid vs. Georgia Tech. Its last win in the series came on March 3, 2019, in a 64-55 road win. Current seniors Jones (12 points), Myers (11 points) and Weber earned playing time as freshmen in that game.
Sammie Puisis is ready to become the third Seminole to lead FSU in 3-point field goals in three consecutive seasons. She would join Wendy Hampton (1994-98) and Christy Derlak (1990-94) on the list. Puisis leads FSU with 39 made 3-point field goals this year.
Georgia Tech’s Lotta-Maj Lahtinen, who played with FSU’s Sara Bejedi on the Finland National Team, leads the Yellow Jackets with 11.0 points per game. Post player Lorela Cubaj is another top-notch player who averages 10.7 points, 11.4 rebounds and has a team-leading 115 assists.
FSU finishes the regular season at Pitt for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Sunday.
While Houston ISD recently recognized 12 finalists as candidates to be named its 2020-21 elementary and secondary teachers of the year, local schools also named their Teachers of the Year this spring.
