the day here, but as of about an hour ago here in las vegas, we are under an excessive heat warning that's going to last until 9:00 p.m. on friday. and tomorrow the city could hit a record. it may get up to 111 degrees. if it does, it will be the hottest it's ever been this early in the year here in las vegas. we've seen that across a huge region. 29 million people are under the heat warnings or advisories here in the west. phoenix could also have record setting triple digit temperatures. that's really the big story. regions that are used to hot weather. how early in the year they're seeing it right now, and these cities are also coming off last year where there were hundreds of deaths because of a heat wave last summer. in phoenix, fire officials say they're going to try new strategies to try to combat some of those deaths this year, people who are being treated for heatstroke might be put into the human sized ice baths on their way to the hospital. here in las vegas, cooling centers have opened, and i was

start this morning. yesterday's cold front cleared overnight. this was sunrise earlier on — barely any cloud to speak of. so plenty of sunshine around first thing, one or two mist and fog patches for the home counties this morning, but the cloud is going to bubble up. it does bring the chance of an isolated shower. not quite as blustery as yesterday, but temperatures certainly cooler — 17 celsius, the maximum. then overnight tonight should be dry with some clear spells to start with, but then we'll start to see a bit more cloud just edging in from the northwest through the early hours into tomorrow morning. that brings the chance of a shower. the wind drops, minimum temperature six celsius. now high pressure at least starts to try and build in from the west through the course of thursday. we will see some showers for the morning, but that should start to clear — dry for the afternoon. sunny spells, patchy cloud, temperatures tomorrow sneaking up a little to 18 celsius. further through this week, we're never far away from a shower, but plenty of dry weather, some sunshine. temperatures still below average, but recovering a little by the end of the weekend. that's all from me for now. you can get the latest on the bbc news app. i'll be back in around half an hour.

and around 17 degrees in london and in plymouth. now as we head into friday, this area of low pressure still swirling to the north of the uk looks set to throw this frontal system southwards that will bring a band of rain southwards across scotland, getting into northern ireland, far north of england, breaking up into showers, further showers following on behind and then further south, more, more in the way of cloud. at this stage, again, the odd shower, a few brighter glimpses. temperatures may be nudging upwards a little bit, 19 degrees there for london, 14 in aberdeen. and it's our area of low pressure that will, i think, win out for the weekend. high pressure trying to build from the west, but not having a huge amount of success. it does mean that where you're closest to that high across the south and the west of the uk, there will be fewer showers, more sunshine, whereas further north and east towards the centre of that area of low pressure, we will see frequent showers and it will still be quite breezy and if anything on the cool side for the time of year, very similar weather on sunday.
