thanks, adriana. yes, we are going to continue to watch what s going on across maui as we do have that forecast here. the recovery forecast as we do have sunshine, dry conditions out there. we will have a few more clouds as we work our way into the middle of the week. as we go through the rest of today, though, we re going to be watching what s happening across the northeast, because we do have that torcon of a three or two. there is a number there so we have potential for tornados. as we move through the rest of the evening time frame, we have three areas that we re really watching as we go through the overnight time frame. up to the east and back to the west as we do have the potential for damaging gusty winds to work their way in through the area and also we re watching some hail as well as some tornados. and then, we talk about that heat that s going to be on tap as we go into your tomorrow. we re talking about that heat indices in the teens once again, and this is going to exten ....

announcer: this is the cbs weekend news from chicago with adriana diaz. good evening. tonight, there is a desperate and intensifying search for the missing on maui. right now they number nearly 1,000 people. at least 80 are confirmed dead with that number expected to rise. today fire crews battled flames still burning from wildfires that ravaged parts of the island. over the historic town of lahaina, the scene is simply apocalyptic. most buildings, torched. some still smoldering. the inferno destroyed much of the town. everything you see in red. and those who escaped the flames are sharing their stories of survival, but also of confusion. we have two reports tonight. cbs s jonathan vigliotti is near lahaina leads us off. jonathan? reporter: adriana, many are returning home today for the first time since this fire hit, and they will face absolute heartbreak. ....

Was their happy place, and now everything we knew, can t go to the gelato shop anymore, can t go to the abc stores, can t go to the bars we used to go to. such a big sense of community and although we still have that sense of community, it s not going to be the same for a while. reporter: that uncertain future also gnaws at la tonya parker, who honeymooned in maui. will you be back? you know not any time soon, to be honest. hawaii s beautiful, but this was a very traumatic experience. reporter: during the first half of the year, maui had nearly 1.5 million visitors. that s a third of all the tourists coming to hawaii in that time, and they spent nearly $3.5 billion. so along with all the other damage here on maui, those tourist dollars are going to be a huge loss. adriana? carter evans, thank you. the weather is playing a critical role in all of this. let s check in now with meteorologist lynette charles from our partners at the weather channel. ....

This week, the visitors who normally flock to maui were part of an exodus. the kapalua airport, jammed with people trying to get out. it was just i want to get out of here. it was it was unbelievable. reporter: julie brazil has a lifelong attachment to maui. her family s taken trips here every year from california for more than three decades. this one ended with an evacuation that lasted 30 hours in a small rental car. was there any point that you were scared? i was. i was. there s this long line of cars, and i m like, am i going to get out of here? what s going to happen? reporter: also on her mind, what s going to happen to lahaina. it s completely gone. they re going to have to rebuild. i don t know how. reporter: to those who live in lahaina there s no real jobs around anymore. you know, around in town or anything. the bakery where i worked is burned down. reporter: also gone is their way of life. everyone who came here, it ....
