2018 Mustang 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet Hits the Market, Cheaper Than Expected

I have said this before and I'll say it again. Before buying a new car, you should always decide on what you plan on doing with it. Because there's no sense in spending a wad of cash on a new AMG if you ultimately realize you wanted to go drag racing every other weekend. You should go straight to the target.

And if drag racing is your thing, there are a lot of options on the market. Most of them will be cars that have been built by someone else, cars that have already seen active duty. And that's not necessarily a bad way to start. But if the budget's there, and you'd rather be first in line, why not get a brand new vehicle? Luckily enough, Ford has thought of drag strip enthusiasts, and has produced the 2018 Mustang 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 features new composite parts

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 features a hand-built, supercharged, 5.2-liter aluminum alloy V8 that is mated to a TREMEC seven-speed dual clutch transmission that then channels the power and torque (760 horsepower, 625 pound-foot) to the rear wheels with a carbon fiber driveshaft. Everything about this car is engineered for performance.
And to that end, Ford Performance Parts (Dearborn, Mich., U.S.) has developed four new aftermarket carbon fiber components for the GT500 that are separate from the components making up the Shelby GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Package.

Four New Carbon Fiber Accessories For the Mustang Shelby GT500 Are Now Available

• Rear decklid trim panel, M-16600-MCF, $575
Each carbon fiber component delivers high strength and rigidity with low-specific weight and is crafted to withstand the high-energy forces generated by competition at the track or drag strip.
The weight of the carbon fiber hood vent and rain tray kit is trimmed to four pounds – half the weight of the corresponding stock part. The front splitter with belly pan drops from seven pounds to four, the front bumper insert weighs just one pound, and the decklid trim panel weighs two pounds. Combined, the pieces weigh nine pounds less than the stock components.
The new parts provide additional authentic carbon fiber options for Shelby GT500 buyers. They are separate from components offered as part of the Shelby GT500 Carbon Fiber Track Package, which includes 20-inch carbon fiber wheels, exposed carbon fiber instrument panel and GT4 track wing, splitter wickers and more.

1968 Mustang with an Ecoboost Inline-Four

1968 Mustang with an Ecoboost Inline-Four
Dakota Muscle Cars built this 1968 Mustang at their company in Sioux City, Iowa. The project started after a drag race torched the factory 289 ci Windsor V8. They replaced it with a turbocharged 2.3 L EcoBoost inline-four featuring a Ford Performance control pack, Mishimoto radiator and interooler, and custom exhaust. Dakota Mustang Cars also swapped the factory three-speed manual transmission with a T56 six-speed manual transmission. Out back sits a Currie 9-inch rear end with 3.89 gears and a LSD. Underneath they installed a Detroit Speed Aluma-Frame front suspension with JRi adjustable coilovers and electric power steering and a Ridetech triangulated 4-link rear suspension with Ridetech adjustable coilovers. Brakes were upgraded to Wilwood six-piston calipers with 14-inch rotors in front and four-piston calipers with 13-inch rotors in back. The car rides on a set of Forgeline FL500 18×8 wheels with Nitto NT555 255/35-ZR18 tires and weighs 3085 lb with a 55/45 bias.

Low-Volume Manufacturers' Law is Set, Now Where Are the Engines?

Low-Volume Manufacturers’ Law Is Set, Now Where Are the Engines?

“…and there was much rejoicing>>>P.”
Research
At least there was for a while.
SEMA sent out a celebratory press release January 21 announcing that the long-awaited law to allow low-volume carmakers to build cars with complete drivetrains in them was finally ready.
“NHTSA has completed a regulation permitting low-volume motor vehicle manufacturers to begin selling replica cars that resemble vehicles produced at least 25 years ago,” SEMA said.
If you’ll recall, Congress enacted a SEMA-led bill into law way the heck back in 2015, thanks to the work of Congressman John Campbell. The law was part of the FAST Act, Fix America’s Surface Transportation Act. The act was voted into law and signed by President Obama that same year, but then sat on Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao’s desk, or it sat somewhere in NHTSA>>>P, awaiting someone to write up specific regulations for how the law should be implemented. It waited so long that SEMA finally sued NHTSA to come up with the regs. That has happened, more or less, and now the law, which streamlines requirements for small automakers, could mean Cobras, ’32 Ford Roadsters and even DeLoreans and Allards should be available for sale with engines and transmssions in them, right on show room floors. Previously companies could make or import“rollers,” cars finished except for engines and drivetrains, the latter which the law required third parties to install. Of course that setup was idiotic. But that’s why we have laws.
