The Hill's Morning Report - Presented by Citizens' Climate Lobby - Deal or no deal? Biden, Capito continue infrastructure talks

A Capito spokeswoman said in a statement that the senator is “encouraged that negotiations have continued” and would brief other GOP senators on the discussion with Biden before engaging with him again on Friday.

“Senator Capito reiterated to the president her desire to work together to reach an infrastructure agreement that can pass Congress in a bipartisan way. She also stressed the progress that the Senate has already made,” the spokeswoman said.

Last week, the Capito-led group presented a $928 billion counteroffer to the White House, which would largely rely on unspent coronavirus response funds already appropriated by Congress, plus a proposed increase in the gas tax. Prior to that, the White House reduced its plan from $2.25 trillion to $1.7 trillion, but the current state of talks has left lawmakers and congressional aides skeptical that a $700 billion gap between the negotiators can be bridged. ....

Republican Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has said that it was stupid for Republican leaders not to invite former President Donald Trump to a GOP congressional retreat.
Republicans met in central Florida this week for the retreat, during which attendees will discuss strategizing the party s policies leading into the 2022 midterm elections. Remember when Republicans lost the House in 2018 because a bunch of them distanced themselves from President Trump? Greene wrote in a tweet published Monday afternoon. Will Biden's attempt to return to Iran deal split Jews? – The Forward

Six years ago, the Jewish American community was evenly divided over a key issue that would help define President Barack Obama’s foreign policy legacy. A survey conducted by the Jewish Journal in July 2015 showed that 49% of American Jews supported the nuclear deal with Iran while 31% were opposed. The debate tore apart even liberal congregations.
As the U.S. entered its third round of indirect talks with Iran on Monday, American Jews - and mainstream Jewish groups - seem less animated by the prospects of returning to the 2015 deal.
That’s not to suggest that American Jews won’t have something to say if an agreement is reached between Washington and Tehran about returning to compliance with the international accord in return for sanctions relief. Israel’s official position is still unclear, given the political deadlock there, and major Jewish groups have yet to indicate how they would react to the restoration of a key Obama foreign policy initiative that Biden has ....
