President Trump Issues an Executive Order Expanding Educational Opportunity Through School Choice

President Trump signed an Executive Order on Monday aimed at expanding school choice options during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This order will allow states to repurpose money through Health and Human Services block grants to cover tuition and fees for:
Private or parochial school;
Special education and related services, including therapies; or
Tutoring or remedial education.
President Trump further said in his order,
“Unfortunately, more than 50 percent of all public-school students in the United States began school remotely this fall. These children, including those with special needs, are being underserved due to the public education system’s failure to provide in-person learning options.” ....

California educators, healthcare and logistics workers: Unite to stop COVID-19 and save lives now!

California educators, healthcare and logistics workers: Unite to stop COVID-19 and save lives now!
This is the founding statement of the Northern California Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee. Join our committee today at wsws.org/edsafety.
The bipartisan “herd immunity” policy of the US government has created an unmitigated disaster and California has become the new epicenter of the pandemic. Every day, tens of thousands of Californians are infected with COVID-19, leading to more preventable deaths. Since November 19, the state has reached new records for daily infections almost every day. The Southern half of the state has entirely run out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. Under these conditions, Democrats in the state legislature are proposing “emergency legislation” in Assembly Bill 10, not to contain the disease but rather to force schools to conduct in-person instruction. ....

CONNECTICUT Gov. Ned Lamont has long contended that, as a result of their regular deep cleaning regimens and ability to easily enforce virus mitigation protocols such as mask-wearing and social distancing, schools were the safest places to be. A new survey of Connecticut teachers shows they clearly disagree.
In fact, 68.8 percent of the educators polled disagreed with the governor s assessment of the workplace s safety during the Age of Coronavirus, and another 17.44 percent were unsure. ....

substitute teachers

By Sophie Quinton

Josephine Brewington has been a substitute teacher in suburban Beech Grove, Indiana, for a decade, but her job has grown in importance as her school district scrambles to supervise pupils whose teachers are sick, quarantining or caring for others.
“We’d have teachers from the high school come over and help teach fourth graders because we didn’t have enough subs,” Brewington said of how the system has handled absences this fall. “People from the offices are helping, principals are covering classrooms - it’s like everyone’s pitching in.”
President-elect Joe Biden has said he wants most schools to be reopened within the first 100 days of his administration, and many city and state policymakers also are pushing schools to offer in-person instruction. They note that the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks in schools is low, working parents rely on schools for child care and students are better able to keep up when they’re in ....

Survey: Half Of Connecticut's Teachers Don't Believe It Is Safe To Return To Classroom

1:00
Two Connecticut teacher’s unions say many educators in the state don’t think schools are safe enough for children or themselves to be in as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
A new survey says about half of the state’s educators don’t want students to come back to the classroom during the pandemic. Mary Yordon is a teacher in Norwalk, and she’s with the American Federation of Teachers.
“Teachers do want to have a delay in returning from the holidays, Yordon said. Many believe we should be going remote. Many want to get back to work as well, in person, as long as we can have the standards that are enforced and rigorous to keep us safe.” ....
