India tests fuel cell-based AIP for submarines - Naval Warfare

Domestically developed capability generates hydrogen on board.
The Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved an ‘important milestone’ in development of an indigenous air-independent propulsion (AIP) system for submarines after testing a land-based prototype, the official Press Information Bureau (PIB) announced on 9 March.
The system ‘was operated in endurance mode and max power mode as per user requirements’, the PIB added, noting that it has reached sufficient maturity to be fitted on ‘target vessels’.
A fuel cell-based AIP capability is being developed by the DRDO-run Naval Materials Research Laboratory  (NMRL), in partnership with Larsen & Toubro and Thermax.  The system is unique ‘as the hydrogen is generated onboard’, according to the PIB.

Indian Navy adds to the depleted underwater combat capability, commissions INS Karanj

Express News Service
NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy commissioned its third indigenously constructed stealth Scorpene-class Submarine INS Karanj on Wednesday at the Mazagaon Naval Dockyard Mumbai.
Six Scorpene-class submarines are being built in India by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M/s Naval Group, France.
Indian Navy said, “INS Karanj would form part of the Western Naval Command’s Submarine fleet and would be another potent part of the Command’s arsenal.” Commodore Anil Jai Singh (Retd) Defence Analyst added, “With the focus now on Underwater Domain Awareness INS Karanj will be a valuable addition to the Navy’s underwater operational capability with its modern technology.”

Report: India's AIP System Test A Step Towards Countering Chinese PLA Navy's Ongoing Expansion

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully conducted the final test of the land-based prototype of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system in Mumbai on Monday (9 March).
The AIP system will be retrofitted into the Kalvari class submarines, whose third model INS Karanj is set to be commissioned on Wednesday.
This new AIP system means the diesel submarines can stay underwater for longer periods of time and become more silent than nuclear submarines.
This latest development is seen as India’s conscious efforts to build capabilities and counter the emergence of the Chinese naval force.

Underwater stealth: DRDO successfully demonstrates home grown AIP, to be pitched for new subs

India has successfully demonstrated that it now has a home grown Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system that adds significant stealth to conventional submarines, greatly enhancing operational effectiveness.
Under development by DRDO for the next generation of diesel electric submarines, the AIP has undergone extensive trails that have now demonstrated that it can be used for underwater operations in excess of two weeks. The system was developed in partnership with private sector players L&T and Thermax.
“DRDO has achieved an important milestone in the development of AIP System by proving the land based prototype on 8 March 2021. The plant was operated in endurance mode and max power mode as per the user requirements,” an official statement read.

Submarine warfare: DRDO conducts final Air Independent Propulsion test: What this means for India's submersible arsenal?

Submarines have, in recent decades, become the principal weapon in naval warfare. The challenge then for submarine designers lies primarily in increasing their underwater endurance and improving their stealth
A traditional diesel-electric submarine is required to frequently surface in order to recharge its batteries giving it an underwater endurance of just a handful of days – usually 4 to 5 days and, at maximum, about a week
