Jo Ann McClellan The Maury County African American Heritage Society will host speaker Dr. Morgan Hines as part of its “The World of Sports” lecture series at 10 a.m. on July 24 at Maury County Archives, 201 East 6th St. in Columbia. Hines is a trainer, coach and has been a promoter for boxers in Columbia for 46 years. Former boxers Aholu Pillow, Jerome Pillow and Sammy Sparkman will also be present to participate in the discussion. Aholu Pillow was an amateur boxer, and assistant coach, turned fashion model, who has appeared on the cover of Iconique Magazine. Jerome Pillow is a former undefeated professional fighter with a 14-0 record with 8 knockouts. He currently serves as a senior coach with the Columbia Boxing Club. ....

In the Unsung Heroes series, look for profiles of the African American doctors, educators, business owners, artists and other community leaders who have helped shape Columbia into the community it is today. In July 2020, the Canaan Rosenwald School, one of Maury County’s treasures was lost when it was destroyed by fire. The Canaan School was one of five Rosenwald Schools, which opened in the 1928-29 school year for African Americans. ....
