World class Black boxing champs lead lecture in Columbia

The Maury County African American Heritage Society will host speaker Dr. Morgan Hines as part of its “The World of Sports” lecture series at 10 a.m. on July 24 at Maury County Archives, 201 East 6th St. in Columbia.
Hines is a trainer, coach and has been a promoter for boxers in Columbia for 46 years. Former boxers Aholu Pillow, Jerome Pillow and Sammy Sparkman will also be present to participate in the discussion.
Aholu Pillow was an amateur boxer, and assistant coach, turned fashion model, who has appeared on the cover of Iconique Magazine. Jerome Pillow is a former undefeated professional fighter with a 14-0 record with 8 knockouts. He currently serves as a senior coach with the Columbia Boxing Club. ....

The historically significant events between Feb. 25 and 26, 1946 in Columbia involving residents of the predominantly black neighborhood, the Bottom, and state authorities have been called many things, including a race riot,  eliciting rumors that several police officers were shot with real bullets, for example. However, the Herald seeks to dispel some of those myths through information gathered from the Maury County Archives, local historians and other historic resources. Below are a few main points that have been distorted in many ways throughout history. 
No one was killed during the incident in the Bottom 
On Feb 26, 1946 when the Tennessee Highway Patrol, led by patrol chief and former all-American football star Lynn Bomar, stormed the Bottom, a black neighborhood located at East 8th Street and North Main. James K. Polk's legacy as expansionist president, left America changed

Few presidents, if any, have changed America so dramatically during a single term than James K. Polk, Maury County Archives director Tom Price said about America s 11th president.
He was an unapologetic workaholic his whole career, Price said. 
According to the President James K. Polk Home and Museum in Columbia, Polk s one-term presidency from 1845 to 1849 was action-packed, in which three states were added to the union, Texas, Iowa and Wisconsin, alongside the acquisition of California.
Grueling long hours and unwavering focus made Polk successful as the youngest president of his time with accomplishments ranging from adding more land to the U.S. than any other president, creating the modern-day postal system and establishing the Smithsonian Institution.  ....
