Former BCSO sgt announces campaign for sheriff

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A former Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office sergeant is kicking off his campaign to be the county’s top cop.
The primary will be held in June 2022 and the general election will be in November 2022.
John Allen, who was BCSO’s homicide sergeant when he left in October 2019, also has experience in crisis intervention, the mobile crisis and SWAT teams and in investigating violent crimes, according to a news release from his campaign.
He has 23 years of law enforcement experience and is currently a lead instructor for various law enforcement agencies.

“I hope to unite the people and policy makers of our county around the goals of ensuring public safety, preventing crime before it happens, and ensuring we take care of our mental and behavioral health calls appropriately,” Allen said in the news release. ....

As the campaign to fill the New Mexico congressional seat vacated by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland enters its final days, Democratic candidate Melanie Stansbury has outraised her leading opponent by more than twice over.
Stansbury raised more than $1.3 million as of May 12, and more than $152,000 since. On May 12, she had almost $525,000 on hand. The largest share of her warchest came from large individual contributions, which have continued to roll in just days before election day.
PACs contributed a combined total of nearly $232,000, around 17 percent of her total fundraising. Elect Democratic Women, a PAC founded by Democratic women in the House, is among Stansbury’s donors, giving $15,000 since she launched her primary campaign for the seat earlier this year. ....

When Carissa McGee was 16 years old, she was sentenced to 21 years in an adult correctional facility for stabbing two members of her family.
McGee told
NM Political Report she was mentally ill at the time, but the judge still sentenced her to more than two decades in prison.
“I experienced my ultimate low. I was sentenced at 16 years old. I didn’t know what 21 years would feel like,” McGee said.
McGee, who is now in her 30s, was granted early release after serving nine years. She said that before her sentencing a children’s psychiatric center evaluated her. Four of the five doctors said she was amenable to treatment. ....
