There had been some talk that we might, once again, get someone to head the Patent Office who actually understood and appreciated the many trade-offs associated with monopoly rights around inventions. But apparently that s not happening. There s an article in The American Prospect saying that Senator Chris Coons one of the more maximalist of the copyright and patent maximalists in Congress has secured some sort of ridiculous deal with the Biden administration that no one who has ever criticized patents will be allowed to run the US Patent & Trademark Office.
Patents have not historically animated sustained intraparty fights that spill out into headlines. President Joe Biden and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai are under industry pressure to make a COVID-19 vaccine intellectual property waiver as narrow as possible.
The Biden administration’s announcement last Wednesday that it planned to support waiving intellectual property (IP) protections for COVID-19 vaccines prompted praise from global public health advocates and outcry from the pharmaceutical industry and corporate America more broadly.
But the historic statement of support, issued by U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, does not make the waiver a done deal. Even if successful, the availability of vaccines could vary greatly based on the final details of the waiver.  ....

Duke University professor is new chief economist at US Department of Commerce

DURHAM – Duke University business professor Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji has been appointed to a senior role in President Joe Biden’s administration to work on policies related to competitiveness, innovation, trade and economic growth.
Chatterji will serve as chief economist of the United States Department of Commerce, acting as the principal economic adviser to the secretary of commerce. He previously worked in President Obama’s administration as a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers.
Chatterji’s research explores the intersection of public policy and business, including a focus on the drivers that enable success for innovative firms and new startups. ....
