The Senate unanimously approved Jen Easterly to serve as director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency via a Monday voice vote following weeks of delays and political infighting.
CISA has been without a Senate-approved director since November 2020, when former President Donald Trump fired Christopher Krebs following the U.S. presidential election. Since that time, the cybersecurity agency has been led by Brandon Wales in an acting capacity.
While Easterly s nomination was approved in June by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which has oversight over CISA, the final vote was delayed by Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who threatened to hold up a number of the administration s nominees in the Department of Homeland ....

DHS announces new measures to boost nation's cybersecurity

“For several years, the Federal government has underestimated the cyber threats posed to state and local networks and neglected the federal government’s responsibility to help defend them,” Thompson and Clarke said in a joint statement on Monday. “Inaction has proven costly for victims – from Albany to Atlanta. And response to opportunistic breaches take the time away from defending against more sophisticated attacks.”
The lawmakers described cybersecurity threats to state and local governments as a “national security issue” and noted that they intend to work with Mayorkas in reintroducing the State and Local Cybersecurity Improvement Act.
The bipartisan bill, which failed to be signed into law during the last Congress, would create a $400 million grant program to provide resources for state and local officials to defend against cyberattacks, which have multiplied during the COVID-19 pandemic.   ....

New cyber panel chair zeros in on election security, SolarWinds hack

As one of the top cyber experts on Capitol Hill, Clarke’s committee will also have its plate full with figuring out how best to allocate resources to hospitals and schools increasingly targeted by hackers, and helping support the nation’s key cyber agency as it enters its third month without Senate-confirmed leadership.
Clarke told The Hill in one of her first interviews as chair of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Innovation that the goal is to chart a course that keeps previous mistakes in the past.

Trump Claims Georgia Runoff is Illegal and Invalid On Twitter

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on New Year s Day to continue his disinformation campaign, claiming that the Georgia Senate runoff election is illegal and invalid.
Trump began his baseless conspiracy thread by reiterating the so-called corruption that took place in the 2020 election, which former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Christopher Krebs, a Trump appointee, called the election the most secure in American history.
Trump then twice asserted the election was illegal. Changes made to the voting process, rules and regulations, many made hastily before the election, and therefore the whole State Election is not legal or Constitutional, the outgoing president tweeted. ....
