Rich Indians can no longer escape their country’s raging pandemic by holidaying in the Maldives, after the island paradise said Wednesday it would ban travel from South Asia as it battles a surge in Covid-19 infections.
The Indian Ocean holiday destination reopened its tourist resorts in July last year after halting international flights for more than three months at the start of the pandemic. But the atoll nation of 340,000 people has been grappling with a jump in cases, including a record single-day rise of 1,500 on Tuesday compared with less than 100 cases just one month ago.
Countries in South Asia, including its largest neighbour India, have been hit by a massive and deadly new wave of infections. The government of Maldives has decided to temporarily suspend the issuance of tourist visas for travellers originating from South Asian countries Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, the tourism ministry ....

Rising coronavirus cases: ANP asks workers to celebrate Eid with simplicity

PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party (ANP) and some other political parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have asked their leaders and workers to celebrate Eidul Fitr at home and avoid holding gatherings and functions in view of the rising coronavirus cases.
In a statement issued from Bacha Khan Markaz, ANP provincial president Aimal Wali Khan said the third wave of the coronavirus was more dangerous than its first and second waves. He said this situation warranted that the traders, business community and general public as well as the political parties must follow and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other safety protocols set by the World Health Organisation against the Covid-19. ....

The United States, Russia and the European countries, among other states, have been selling arms to the Middle East for the past five decades, rather than supporting the region’s development through investment and knowhow in its industrial, agricultural, renewable energy, and other sectors. This skewed approach is no longer tenable, and the West must help countries of the region modernise and keep abreast of global industrial developments, notably by ensuring that the labour force is suitably trained to become a productive economic resources.
