Styron's novels--such as Confessions of Nat Turner and Sophie's Choice--have established him as a writer of international stature. Here he traces the betrayals, spite and disappointed love that afflict the members of a Southern family and that culminate in the suicide of the beautiful Peyton Loftis.

From the Back Cover:
With the publication in 1952 of his first novel,
Lie Down in Darkness, William Styron, author of
Sophie's Choice, was catapulted into the front ranks of post-war American writers, achieving immediate international recognition.
In this novel, the South looms dark and ominous in the background with its Biblical rhetoric, its conflict between a tradition of religious fundamentalism and modern scepticism, racial contrasts and the industrialisation of a rural society.

In the days and weeks following the 2020 presidential election, writer and Quogue resident Roger Rosenblatt began to feel a distinct sense of unease.
“When Biden and Harris won and Trump started his malevolent mischief — around November 10 or 11, a week after the election when all the results were in — the news went to riots in various cities where Trump-inspired thugs were fighting those who were celebrating,” Rosenblatt recalled. “The visual impact from that was severe.”
His was a common reaction, and one that only grew worse during the subsequent interregnum — the two months between the election and the date on which President Joseph Biden officially took office. Normally, it’s a period of calm, transition and celebration (for the victor’s camp, at least). This time around, it was anything but. The visual impact that first disturbed Rosenblatt in November culminated in all out mayhem that gripped Washington, D.C., on January 6, when supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in a misguided effort to overturn the presidential election.

Mark Harris has written two remarkable books, both about important moments in Hollywood history. The first, "Pictures at a Revolution," dealt with the Oscar race of 1967 and how that year's Best Picture nominees represented the past, present and future of the industry. Then there was 2014's "Five Came Back," about the A-list directors who left their careers behind to take part in WWII — and how their work changed upon their return.
Now, Harris has written almost 600 pages about one man only, and it may be the best biography of an artist in a very long time. That man is performer-turned-director Mike Nichols, the winner of one Oscar, two Emmys and eight Tony Awards. "In the last two books, I had the luxury of going back and forth between main characters," said Harris, who titled his work "Mike Nichols: A Life." "In this one, I had no one else to cut to."

On Thursday, December 17, at 6 p.m., The Peter Matthiessen Center will host a virtual gathering featuring an intimate reading of a few favorite passages of Peter Matthiessen’s most admired works by former friends and colleagues in the literary, environmental, human rights and Zen Buddhist world.
Scholar and environmentalist Bill McKibben will take part in a special presentation. Naturalist and New York Times best-selling author Carl Safina and environmentalist Alex Matthiessen — the author’s son — will both read from “The Snow Leopard.” Also taking part in the evening will be Rose Styron, a human rights activist and longtime friend of Matthiessen; Buddhist photographer Peter Cunningham, who accompanied Matthiessen on his 1982 pilgrimage to Japan recounted in “Nine-Headed Dragon River”; and farmer, poet, educator, and former Zen student Scott Chaskey.
