Prose that spans the globe, a prescient novel about a plague and more: 6 new paperbacks

Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times
Need a thrilling thriller? A timely nonfiction collection? A trip back to a literary corner of 1920s London? Here they are ... and all in paperback, too.
"Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line" by Deepa Anappara (Random House, $18). The first novel from Anappara, a journalist who spent years working in Mumbai and Delhi, India, won the Edgar Award last month for best novel, presented by the Mystery Writers of America. It's the story of a 9-year-old boy who lives in a slum in an imaginary Indian city, and who turns detective when one of his classmates disappears. "Rich with easy joy, Anappara's writing announces the arrival of a literary supernova," wrote a New York Times reviewer, adding as a warning, "If you begin reading the book in the morning, don't expect to get anything done for the rest of the day."

West Seattle Blog… | The A. Scott Bullitt Lecture In American History Presents Michelle Duster

Registration required. Click here to register.
Ida B. Wells was often overlooked and underestimated—a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. Hear professor and Wells’s great-granddaughter Michelle Duster, offer a “warm remembrance of a civil rights icon” (Kirkus Reviews).
The A. Scott Bullitt Lecture in American History is made possible by a generous gift from the late Priscilla Bullitt Collins in honor of her father, A. Scott Bullitt. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation, author series sponsor Gary Kunis, and media sponsor The Seattle Times, and presented in partnership with The Elliott Bay Book Co. This program will recorded, captioned and posted for 30 days on The Seattle Public Library’s YouTube page after the event.

Seattle Independent Bookstore Day Is Back for 2021

Seattle Independent Bookstore Day Is Back for 2021
The local seller celebration retains its book passport but is now both virtual and IRL, and runs for 10 days.

Madison Books is one of the stores participating in this year's altered Independent Bookstore Day.
This year Seattle Independent Bookstore Day is a “day” in the way that Seattle Restaurant Week is a week—not even slightly. The annual celebration of indie sellers was mostly canceled last year (pandemic). This year (still pandemic) it’s spread across 10 days (April 24–May 3) and straddles online and brick and mortar—all to make the typical tsunami of book people more of a gently lapping tide.

Stranger Suggests: Demon Anime! Abstract Paintings! Port Townsend!

ever is coming to Washington. Half a year after its theatrical release in Japan,
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will tour American theaters. Yes! Movie theaters. We can go to those now. The movie is based on
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the wildly popular anime and manga series that follows Tanjiro Kamado, a teen who turned to demon-slaying after a demon killed his entire family and turned his sister, Nezuko, into a demon.
In season one, Tanjiro and a pacified Nezuko comb Japan looking for a way to turn Nezuko human again, fighting a lot of demons along the way. The movie picks up where season 1 left off and acts as a canonical bridge between season 1 and the soon-to-be-released season 2. During just its opening weekend in Japan last year,
