A federal court in Texas gave the FBI the go-ahead to remove malware from on-premises Microsoft Exchange servers at organizations infected in a wave of voluminous zero-day attacks earlier this year, the Department of Justice said on Tuesday.
Since Friday, the FBI has been removing web shells, or scripts that allow remote access, from Exchange servers belonging to organizations in at least eight states, according to an unsealed application for a search warrant released by the DOJ. The operation is authorized to run through April 23. ....

The strange, violent death of Parler

Parler / WIRED
In the days before Parler went offline, its members raged. The number of posts using terms such as civil war, insurrection and rebellion soared while mentions of the Proud Boys – a far-right, neo-fascist, male-only extremist group, also increased dramatically. Parler data analysed by WIRED reveals that the mentions of such terms rose from just 858 instances on January 1 to 3,261 at their peak on January 9 – an increase of 280 per cent.
The data, pulled from Parler in the hours before it went offline by Junkipedia, a disinformation analysis tool, reveals a surge in activity on the site in the days surrounding the storming of the US Capitol. Between January 1 and January 10, the day that Parler went offline, posts mentioning terms such as civil war and insurrection received more than 212,500 total interactions (likes, comments and shares) and were seen by an audience of more than four million people. At its peak on January 6 such posts on Parler were view ....

President Donald J. Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday on a charge of inciting an insurrection, one week after a riot at the U.S. Capitol led to the deaths of five people.
Many experts don’t believe the impeachment will have a direct impact on cybersecurity. But they warn that the ongoing turmoil surrounding the White House could create fresh opportunities for adversaries seeking to exploit chaos for their own ends.
The House voted 232-197 in favor of impeachment. Ten Republican lawmakers and all Democratic House members supported impeachment. It’s the second time Trump has been impeached during his term, and the first time a president has ever been impeached twice. ....

A security researcher based in Vienna led a fast-paced, crowdsourced effort to archive posts, videos and images from the social network Parler after rioters on Wednesday violently stormed the U.S. Capitol.
Parler, launched in 2018, was modeled on Twitter but with a self-proclaimed focus on free speech. It has been adopted by American conservatives as an alternative to mainstream social media platforms, says threat intelligence firm Recorded Future. Following the November 2020 U.S. election, millions of users registered for accounts on Parler.
The Vienna-based researcher and other researchers say that they found a way to forcibly archive Parler content to retain communications that may have touched on the planning and execution of the Wednesday riot. ....
