Yale infectious disease physician nominated to serve as state DPH commissioner


He made the announcement Monday during a news conference.
Lamont said he is nominating Dr. Manisha Juthani, an infectious disease physician at the Yale School of Medicine.
“I am grateful to the civil servants at the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Dr. Gifford, and Governor Lamont for leading us through this pandemic to date. Under Dr. Gifford’s leadership, I look forward to continuing their efforts related to COVID-19, mental health, health equity, health disparities, and access to healthcare going forward, said Juthani.
According to the governor s office, Juthani specializes in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infections in older adults.

Dr. Thomas Matthew, Cardiac Surgery
A surgeon for nearly 30 years, Dr. Thomas Matthew is director of the Johns Hopkins Cardiothoracic Surgery Program at Suburban Hospital. Matthew studied electrical engineering at Harvard, earned his medical degree from Columbia University, and received a Master of Science degree in surgical research from the University of Virginia. He is also an assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins and chairman of the Maryland Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative, a consortium of 11 cardiac surgery programs in Maryland. Matthew lives in Northwest D.C. with his wife, Dayna Bowen Matthew, dean of the George Washington University Law School.

In 1972, Dr. Nina Schor, current deputy director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), became the first young woman to win first place in the Science Talent Search (STS). For the 80
th anniversary of the competition and during Women’s History Month, Maya Ajmera, President and CEO of Society for Science, Publisher of

William Beaver, groundbreaking painkiller researcher who drafted the initial rules for FDA clinical drug trials, dies of covid complications

William T. Beaver, a medical educator and researcher who helped establish a scientific basis for the use of painkilling drugs from aspirin to morphine and later chaired a federal panel on the medical use of marijuana, died of complications from covid-19 on Nov. 12 at a care facility near his longtime home in Waterford, Va., his family said. He was 87.
Beaver was the clinical pharmacologist at Georgetown University who is credited with drafting the initial federal regulations defining “adequate and controlled” clinical studies, according to a 2008 history of clinical trials and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
