I will cruise but not from a Florida port

I will cruise but not from a Florida port | Letters
Here’s what readers are saying in Monday’s letters to the editor.

Cruising away from COVID
To help cruise lines, repeal law banning vaccination passports | A South Florida Sun-Sentinel editorial, May 14
We’ve booked a summer cruise on Celebrity out of St. Maartin. We feel safe boarding a ship where everyone has been vaccinated. Of course, I would rather have sailed out of Tampa (or anywhere in Florida) but Gov. Ron DeSantis has mandated no “vaccine passports.” Without the cruise line being able to confirm vaccinations, there is no way I would feel confident spending a week in such an enclosed situation. I remember the cruise horrors of last March and have no wish for a repeat. The governor needs to reconsider what is in the best interest of his constituents.

Letter: Congress needs to act on climate change

In Wisconsin, there are presently 23 resolutions endorsing some level of climate action.

You may have noticed that there are a growing number of businesses, organizations, and local and state governments urging Congress to take action to address the climate emergency. So how do we, the voting public, help encourage action?
The key is to get the attention of our members of Congress. What we, the public, care about is important to them. After all, we are their constituents, the people who vote for them (or not). Our members of Congress take notice of activity back home. Passing local municipal endorsements that support action on climate change is one way to make a big impact.

In response to the article “Climate misinformation focusing on local events” (Associated Press, April 22), it is clear that extreme weather events are changing how people think about climate change. According to a recent survey from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, approximately two out of three Americans (64 percent) think that global warming is affecting weather in the United States.
Interest in tackling climate change is growing. More of my friends and co-workers talk about the need to reduce human-produced greenhouse gases, which are fueling climate change and these extreme weather events.

Hanover High School mascot change is an important first step
Valley News Sports Editor Greg Fennell did a superb job addressing the decision of the Hanover High School Council to discontinue the use of the Marauder as the school mascot (“Hanover’s mascot move,” May 1).
The coaches of the Hanover High School boys soccer program are grateful to our players, and the entire student body, for meaningfully engaging in discussions about misogyny, sexual violence and their assumptions around masculinity.
We’ve been following the discussions as they have developed, and we’ve been having our own, as well. We support the recent vote from the Council to replace the Marauder mascot and believe it signals an empathy for others and a willingness to address these issues.

The first Earth Day — April 22, 1970 — marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Its history is instructive in that this day grew out of bipartisan support. Earthday.org reports it this way: “Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders.”

Carbon price is vaccine for ailing climate

Marat Moore
Guest Opinion
Last year on Earth Day, the first wave of COVID-19 had us in its grip. Across Tennessee, businesses and schools went dark, church pews emptied, and sick patients filled hospital beds. In April 2020 we could not have foreseen the losses families would suffer in the year to come, or the traumas health care workers would endure.
But on this Earth Day, we have cause for cautious hope. Why? Because major pharmaceutical companies raced — and in one case, even cooperated — to develop safe vaccines. With the boost of the Defense Production Act, vaccine production and distribution ramped up at record speed.
