New device for scaling up quantum computers

New device for scaling up quantum computers
Australian scientists have developed a new cryogenic computer system called
Gooseberry which has potential for scaling up quantum computers from dozens to thousands of qubits.

Quantum computing – as opposed to traditional (or "classical") computing – has been around for many years now. This area of computer science involves the exploitation of physical phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to perform calculations. Unlike the "bits" of classical computers, which are based on binary ones and zeros, quantum computer "qubits" can work with multiple values simultaneously. By combining qubits in this way, it quickly becomes possible to work with exponentially larger numbers, with potentially revolutionary applications. If fully realised, quantum computers could solve problems in fields as diverse as cryptography, medicine, finance, artificial intelligence and logistics.

Media ownership in Australia is one of the most concentrated in the world (Learn more). Since the trend of consolidation is and has historically been upward, fewer and fewer individuals or organizations control increasing shares of the mass media in our country. According to independent assessment, about 98% of the media sector is held by three conglomerates. This tendency is not only totally unacceptable, but also to a degree frightening). Learn more here

A D.C. judge Monday dismissed a murder charge against an anti-violence counselor in the District who had been accused in a 2017 fatal shooting, concluding authorities did not have enough evidence linking him to the crime, according to court officials and the man's defense attorney.
Following a preliminary hearing, D.C. Superior Court Judge Danya Dayson ordered that 39-year-old Cotey Wynn be released from D.C. jail.

MULLICA HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- It may be a Sunday and a snow day, but eleventh-grade students Mary Monaca and Gavin Corley drove to school before sunrise to make a difference.
"At least we're trying our best to continue some of the traditions," said Corley, one of the many students whose high school experience has been curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both Monaca and Corley sit as co-chairs on Clearview Regional High School's Hoagies 4 Hope campaign, an annual charity event they've been working with since they were seventh graders. Since 2015, the fundraiser has netted more than $100,000 for local individuals navigating financial hardships.

For a few minutes, Captain Munn stepped away from his daily routine to get his second dose of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine. As a first responder, he says navigating the pandemic can be tough.

PLANT CITY, Fla. — A Plant City, Florida, family spent the majority of their 2020 trying to figure out what was wrong with their three-year-old daughter. That’s when the girl’s mom took matters into her own hands and came up with the diagnosis herself.
Watching Leilani play on the living room floor, you’d have no idea she was confined to a hospital bed, fighting for her life, just a month ago.
