STIMULUS RESPONSE Not all that long ago, Donald Trump was arguing for a $2 trillion Covid relief bill with $2,000 stimulus checks. Weeks ago, he pinpointed the GOP
loss of the Georgia Senate seats on Mitch McConnell’s refusal to consider the measure.
Now Biden is
pushing a massive stimulus bill of roughly the same size and with similar direct payments. And Republicans seem certain to oppose it en masse.
How could that be? The answer is, at once, simple. Being the opposition party carries certain responsibilities. But it also says a lot about the state of the post-Trump GOP. ....

Giving cash payments to the poor has become the latest hot policy idea bubbling up from both progressives and conservatives across the country. In New York City, Andrew Yang, the former tech entrepreneur, jumped into the mayor s race by pledging to give roughly $2,000 a year to half a million of the city s lowest-income residents, a scaled-back version of a Universal Basic Income plan he introduced during his presidential run.
But Yang is not the only mayoral candidate in favor of putting more money directly in the hands of people. Shaun Donovan, the former Obama administration housing secretary, is campaigning on an economic plan previously known as Baby Bonds. Donovan s Equity Bonds would establish government savings accounts for all New York City children and make annual contributions ....

Sens. Cory Booker and Mitt Romney have each proposed their own amped-up child-benefit programs amid President Joe Biden s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package, lending bipartisan credence to the goal of reducing child poverty through legislation.
Neither plan has passed Congress, but together they signal an emerging consensus on the issue.
Under Romney s Family Security Act, introduced on Thursday, families would receive $350/month (or $4,200 per year) for each child aged 5 and under and $250/month ($3,000 annually) for each child aged 6 to 17. ....
