The Competition and Consumer Act 2010, which came into effect on 1 January 2011, was a significant legal and economic reform that heralded a new era in Australian consumer protection by introducing a single national consumer law and civil penalties, ACCC Chair Rod Sims said today.
Mr Sims spoke via webinar at a Monash University National Commercial Law Seminar hosted at the Federal Court in Melbourne to mark the 10th anniversary of the Competition and Consumer Act (CCA), which incorporates the Australian Competition Law (ACL).
“The ACL’s introduction was a game changer that allowed the ACCC and State and Territory regulators to collaborate much more easily on consumer issues,” Mr Sims said. ....

A longtime Kamloops resident and Crown prosecutor will seek the nomination to be the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative candidate in the next federal election.
Frank Caputo, 42, announced today, March 2, he will seek the nomination, bringing to three the number of people now vying for the candidacy after four-term MP Cathy McLeod decided last month not to seek reelection.
Caputo is president of the Conservative Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding association, having served in that role the past three years after three years as its vice-president. ....

House COVID Relief Bill Includes Critical Expansions of Child Tax Credit and EITC | Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

Two key tax credit provisions in the COVID relief legislation that the House passed February 27 would provide significant help to those on the fault lines of some of the pandemic’s worst economic effects. People who have lower incomes, are Black or Latino, have less than a college education, or work in face-to-face service occupations have long faced barriers to high-paying jobs and opportunity, which the pandemic and its economic fallout have widened. The House bill’s provisions making the full Child Tax Credit available to all children except those with the highest incomes (sometimes called making the credit “fully refundable”), and making an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) available to far more low-paid workers not raising children in the home (so-called “childless workers”), would result in historic reductions of child poverty and provide timely income support for millions of people, including millions ....
