Amtrak looking to improve long routes

Amtrak, America’s only major passenger train system, is re-examining timetables and finding other ways to improve its 15 national routes to bring in more riders and revenue. Among those under review are two routes that dip into Ohio and are practically hidden at night, their trains passing through when most people are sleeping.
In many states, travelers who take Amtrak’s long-distance trains for vacations or out-of-state business trips board in the middle of the night and return home from such cities as Chicago or New York City at times that are just as inconvenient.
Businessman Dave Shreiner, 63, typically boards around 1:30 am at a tiny Amtrak stop in Alliance, Ohio. He travels exclusively by rail half of the year, visiting clients around the US. “It makes planning a trip a challenge,” Shreiner said. ....

Pennsylvania cities could see 15 new train round trips as part of Amtrak proposal

An Amtrak train at Bryn Mawr, Pa. traveling westbound towards Pittsburgh In March, Amtrak announced its 2035 Vision plan which included proposals to expand and improve rail service throughout America, with more than 30 new routes and better service on more than 20 existing routes.
Under that plan, Pennsylvania would see three completely new routes serving the eastern part of the state, as well as enhanced service routes throughout the state, including Western Pennsylvania.
Recently, Amtrak released even more details about the 2035 Vision plan, including precisely how many round trip trains it is proposing for each new route. According to the Connect Us report, Pennsylvania cities could see 15 new train round trips. HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. The coach section of the train was nearly full as we rolled through this historic town where West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia meet at the junction of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.
But as the Capitol Limited emerged from a tunnel and glided across a bridge over the Potomac and into town, a conductor reminded us that despite the increase in passengers Amtrak’s ridership dropped by 95% amid the pandemic a year ago we were still far from a return to normal. ....
