Number of North Korean Defectors Drops to Lowest Level in Two Decades

The number of North Korean defectors (refugees) reaching South Korea in 2020 dropped sharply, dipping to a new low since the refugee outflow began in the late 1990s, as the North was suffering from the famine during the era known as the Arduous March. The South Korean Unification Ministry reported that during the entire year of 2020, only 229 North Koreans sought admission and were resettled in the South down from 1,047 who arrived in 2019 and 1,137 who arrived in 2018.
The number of refugees in 2020 was significantly lower than any time in the previous two decades. When defectors began to arrive in South Korea in the late 1990s, 947 arrived in the two or three years through 1998. In the three years from 1999–2001, an additional 1,043 arrived. In 2002, the number given refuge in the South was 1,142, and from that time the number increased to its highest level of 2,914 in 2009. Since that time, the number of defectors slowly fluctuated downward, but well ....

Former North Korean ambassador to Kuwait defected in 2019 and now lives in South Korea


South Korean media, including
Maeil Business Newspaper, reported that the acting ambassador defected with his wife and a child, only weeks after Jo Song-gil, acting ambassador to Italy, defected to South Korea in July 2019. The paper said Mr Ryu left because he wanted his child to have a better life.
Mr Tae, who was North Korea’s deputy ambassador to the UK before his own defection in 2016, won a seat in South Korea’s parliament in April. He said the defections put strains on Kim Jong-un’s regime, which had relied on diplomats to help fill the coffers of the sanctions-hit state. ....

Kim Jong Un was one of the only foreign leaders who didn t congratulate Joe Biden for winning the presidential election, but the supreme leader of North Korea has made several comments alluding to his view of Biden as the U.S. president.
A few weeks before Biden s inauguration, Kim spoke at a Workers Party Congress meeting in Pyongyang and called the U.S. his country s biggest enemy, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, according to Reuters. ....
