For first time in decades, Southold Democrats field town clerk candidate

November’s election will feature something not seen in more than three decades in Southold Town: a contested race for town clerk.
The Southold Town Democratic Committee announced Monday that Candace Hall, a native of Greenport, has earned the nomination for clerk.
Ms. Hall is a small-business owner, licensed insurance broker and former preschool teacher who says she is passionate about ensuring diverse representation for minority children.
She said she’s thrilled to bring her positive energy, administrative and management skills and commitment to the community to Town Hall. ....

Two years ago, Greg Doroski of Mattituck came up just 117 votes shy of ousting incumbent town Supervisor Scott Russell from office.
Now, he’s returning to local politics in a run for one of two open seats on the Town Board in November’s election.
“I feel called to do the hard work required to preserve the irreplaceable character of our community,” Mr. Doroski said as the Southold Town Democratic Committee announced its slate of candidates at a virtual convention Tuesday. ....

One week after a violent mob of President Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, forcing lawmakers to flee for safety, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) maintained his support for the outgoing president after witnessing firsthand a moment he said he would “never forget.”
Mr. Zeldin, an ardent supporter of President Trump since his presidential campaign first began in 2015, had been scheduled to speak on the House floor as an Arizona objector as Congress formally certified President-elect Joe Biden’s victory last Wednesday when a scene of chaos unfolded unlike anything in modern American history. ....
