ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:
Most people in the U.S. who are being held in jail have not been convicted of a crime. Instead, they are awaiting trial. For some, that wait can take weeks or even years if they can t afford to pay a cash bail to be released. That practice is controversial. While a few states have taken steps to change their cash bail system, Illinois will become the first to ditch it entirely. NPR s Cheryl Corley reports.
CHERYL CORLEY, BYLINE: Critics of cash bail have a name for it. They call it the poor people s tax, leaving those who can t come up with the money for bail stuck in jail while they wait for their case to be heard. Fifty-seven-year-old Flonard Wrencher says he knows all about that. ....

Illinois Sheriff's Association & local sheriff's departments speak out against House Bill 163

January 8, 2021
UNDATED – The Illinois Sheriff’s Association along with local law enforcement agencies have expressed their opposition to a House bill that could change policing in the state. The Illinois legislature will be looking into the 611-page bill in a lame-duck period for the next few days. The House Bill 163 proposal includes ending qualified immunity for police, eliminating cash bail, felony murder, and the removal of any federal surplus equipment militaristic in nature. In an interview, Illinois Sheriff’s Association Executive Director Jim Kaitschuk, says it’s the most devastating piece of legislation to affect law enforcement. The Illinois General Assembly has until noon, January 13th to pass the legislation. Local sheriff’s departments Lee and LaSalle County are siding with the Law Enforcement Coalition, pushing for conversations with legislators in working to support reforms that will improve the criminal justice system. ....

Pro-Trump Mob's Attack on the Capitol Is White Supremacy on Parade

These people did this because they could. What we all witnessed on January 6th was not so much white extremism as the natural and inevitable result of white entitlement, a group of people putting into action their belief that they’re the only ones with the right to pick this country’s leadership. They’re reinforced by a president who found political prominence by claiming the first black president of the United States was born in Kenya. They’re validated by pro-Trump lawmakers who continue to insist the only way they could lose an election would be for someone else to steal it. Then, this country and its  ....

Business owners recognized for commitment to Beaver County

It was a tough year to do business in Pennsylvania – a reality the Beaver County Chamber of Commerce recognizes.
Each year, the chamber’s annual Business of the Year awards acknowledge local leaders for their dedication to regional growth and quality of life.
Many entrepreneurs were forced to get crafty in 2020 amid a global pandemic and targeted mitigation efforts.
Small business of the year winners Karl Chapple and Nancy Chapple, owners of Minuteman Press in Beaver Falls, kept their full-service design, printing and marketing center open throughout the year as an essential business.
“While we offer COVID-19-related products to promote safety and social distancing, it was obvious that our ability to deliver the printed products that our customers depend on to keep their businesses going was a welcome relief, and that we were one constant during a time of turmoil and uncertainty,” Karl Chapple said. ....
