Kurri Kurri conflicts: new gas plant is a field day for party donors
A $600 million subsidy for a gas plant in Kurri Kurri makes no commercial sense for the taxpayer, but there are plenty of windfalls for Liberal Party donors.

Has there ever been a project that so neatly fits the government’s political agenda as well as the commercial interests of its mates?
The $600 million subsidy announced for a gas plant in Kurri Kurri makes no commercial sense for the taxpayer, but there are windfalls everywhere you look for Liberal donors.

Morrison in mad scramble to boost fossil fuels while the world changes fast

30 April 2021
One of the defining characteristics of Australia’s energy and climate debate – and RenewEconomy readers will be deeply familiar with this – is that it is inherently circular. A closed loop repeating pattern of a small and predictable set of policy tricks are enacted by a conservative government, the opposition party does not oppose them. Industries heavily vested in fossil fuels twist the knobs and turn the levers in the background to maximise opportunity and eradicate risk, and the cycle repeats.
Occasionally, something weird happens. Tony Abbott was weird. The West-Australian election, and the Liberal party’s plan to literally decarbonise the entire power sector in 10 years, was weird. But for the most part, it’s the same simple tropes on repeat.

Activist investor group Market Forces is widening its radical campaign that asks ASX-listed fossil fuel companies to plan for their own demise in order to align with Paris climate goals, kicking off with a resolution put forward to Santos.
Woodside Petroleum, Oil Search, Whitehaven Coal and New Hope Corporation will be among the others to be targeted by Market Forces this year in an expansion of the strategy it introduced last year to use “wind-down” resolutions to try to ensure global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The campaign represents a major escalation from earlier typical demands for disclosure on climate-related risks, but has found support from major institutional investors including Aviva and Californian pension fund Calpers. Market Forces is part of the environment group Friends of the Earth.

ANZ Bank's new chair Paul O'Sullivan says the lender's dividend policy will be guided by how the coronavirus crisis evolves, despite the bulk of its customers affected by the pandemic lockdowns restarting to make payments.
Mr O'Sullivan, speaking at the bank's annual general meeting on Wednesday, said he was "acutely aware" of how important dividends are to shareholders and committed to reviewing the bank's approach in 2021.
