The Other Regional Counter-Revolution: Iran’s Role in the Shifting Political Landscape of the Middle East

The last decade has seen historic political upheavals across the Middle East and North Africa: a tsunami of popular uprisings that have brought down several dictators and led to momentous transformations in political consciousness, if not always to democratic outcomes. But the last decade has also seen a concomitant counter-revolutionary roll-back across the region: authoritarian regimes, entrenched elites, ruling classes, deep states, and reactionary forces have marshalled considerable resources to torpedo these movements from below.[1]

Copenhagen-based Final Cut for Real CEO Signe Byrge Sørensen might be unassuming and soft-spoken, but her vision, will power and fire for urgent stories have made her a world-class producer. Her documentary credits boast countless festival hits and accolades, including two Oscar-nominated films, “The Act of Killing” (2014) and “The Look of Silence” (2016), to the 2020 CPH:DOX top winner “Songs of Repression,” and recent Sundance Grand Jury Winner “Flee.”
Her company Final Cut for Real is delivering five competition entries at this year’s CPH:DOX, including Sørensen’s own-produced “President,” a Sundance Special Jury Prize winner, and new pic “Our Memory Belongs to Us,” both running for the main Dox:Award.

The Syrian Revolution: reflections on a decade of struggle

The cycle of protests that collectively became known as the “Arab Spring” were triggered by a desperate event outside a government building in the small Tunisian city of Sidi Bouzid in late December 2010, when Mohamad Bouazizi set fire to himself in an act of protest.
Mass demonstrations followed across Tunisia and quickly ricocheted across the Middle East and North Africa — expressions of young and old, men and women asserting their right to a life of dignity.
By early February, huge mobilizations had forced Tunisian and Egyptian dictators Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak to resign. However, it’s a long road from regime change to social transformation as would become clear over the following years. And even such a preliminary victory would prove elusive for other countries in the region.

Tickets for film screenings for Qumra 2021 Online, which is its largest virtual edition yet, are now on sale, Doha Film Institute (DFI) announced yesterday. Qumra is a unique professional incubator presented by DFI annually, which in the past seven years has been crucial to the success of filmmakers from the Arab world and beyond. “A space for new voices in cinema,” this year’s Qumra comprises a fully online programme which includes film screenings, master classes and talks running from March 12 to 17. “Delighted to announce that tickets are now on sale for this year’s Qumra Screenings — a selection of acclaimed featurelength and short films which we’ve supported via our grants programme as well as filmmaking Labs,” said DFI on its official social media accounts yesterday. Film enthusiasts can choose from an array of acclaimed feature films including “200 Meters”, “Their Algeria”, “The Unknown Saint”, “Mica”, “The Marriage Project”, and “A Comedian in a Syrian Tragedy.”
