CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Authorities have cancelled an AMBER Alert, saying a child reportedly abducted from the Charlottesville area has been found safe.
The Virginia State Police announced early Tuesday, January 19, that 5-year-old Bricen Kent Mwanawabene had been located and Kerlie Johnson Gage was in custody.
In a release Monday, police said Bricen was last seen in the 1500 block of Cherry Avenue. They believed the child was abducted around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and was in “extreme danger.” ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) is making a big change to its organization to keep up with recent growth.
The LAJC has named its former managing attorney Elaine Poon as its first-ever Deputy Director for Advocacy. The change was made in part due to the amount and type of work the center has taken on in recent years. In the new job, Poon will help set the vision and direction for the organization, while making sure it is cohesive in working to advance the LAJC’s mission. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Dr. Cameron Webb has been tapped for a senior role in President-elect Bidenâs response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Webb, a doctor in the University of Virginia Health System and former candidate for 5th District representative, has been named the senior policy advisor for COVID-19 equity. In the role, Dr. Webb would address issues of racial disparities in impact from the virus, and ensuring equitable distribution of the vaccine into the future. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Central Virginia’s lawmakers are now back to work for this year’s meeting of the General Assembly. It’s a race against the clock in this year’s short session, further compounded by the rule that delegates only get to introduce seven bills, a limit introduced to help deal with the technological shortcomings of legislating from a distance due to COVID-19.
Delegate Rob Bell (R-58th District) is focusing on some key changes for mental and behavioral health and ID laws for Virginians with special needs. One bill, H.B. 2236, aims to transfer supervision in cases where the person on the behavioral health docket does not live where they were in court. ORANGE, Va. (WVIR) - More than a decade since she went missing, Samantha Clarke’s case remains open and police in the town of Orange remain dedicated to finding her. On Friday, January 15, the Town of Orange Police Department announced it was moving the investigation into a new phase.
“Due to new information and advances in investigative and forensic technology, Samantha’s missing person investigation has been reclassified as an active abduction and murder investigation,” OPD Chief James Fenwick said. ....
