WASHINGTON - Former President Donald Trump pressed the Justice Department during his waning weeks in office to join his failed effort to overturn his election defeat based on his false claims of voting fraud, but its leaders refused, with one decrying the pure insanity of the claims, documents released on Tuesday showed.
The records, obtained by the House of Representatives Oversight and Reform Committee, provided new insight into the actions of the Republican former president in trying to enlist the department to act on his claims. The documents showed a series of overtures made by Trump, then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and an outside private attorney, Kurt Olsen. ....

Top Security Officials Defend Delay of National Guard During Capitol Attack


Defense officials told Congress that the delay in getting the National Guard to the Capitol during the attack on Jan. 6 was unavoidable because law enforcement officials simply were not prepared for a violent mob.

WASHINGTON (CN) Top security officials defended the deployment delay of the National Guard to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 during a tense oversight hearing Tuesday where lawmakers pored over the litany of intelligence failures pockmarking the deadly day.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC) – House lawmakers continue to look for answers regarding the security failures surrounding the January 6th attack on the US Capitol.
FBI Director Christopher Wray and top military officials testified virtually before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the second such hearing since the deadly insurrection.
Lieutenant General Walter Piatt and General Charles Flynn both testified that they did not deny requests to send in help on January 6th.
General Flynn said, “Reaching his side I recall hearing an unidentified person on the other end of the speakerphone tensely ask, ‘Are you denying our request?’ General Piatt responded with the words to the effect, ‘I am not denying your request, I am waiting for an answer from Secretary McCarthy who is with the acting Secretary of Defense presently.
