Hirshhorn Museum is under pressure to reconsider redesign of its sculpture garden

Facing challenges from a federal planning authority and advocacy groups, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC is under pressure to revamp or justify elements of a significant redesign of its sunken sculpture garden.
The original Japanese Zen-inflected garden, which spans 1.5 acres next to the National Mall, was completed in 1974 by the architect Gordon Bunshaft as a complement to the museum’s distinctive Modernist drum-shaped concrete and granite building. The garden’s Brutalist gravel walkways and lack of shade made it inhospitable to visitors during Washington’s hot summers, however, prompting the Hirshhorn to enlist the landscape architect Lester Collins three years later to add trees, plant beds and other vegetation in a choreographic procession as well as introduce ramps for wheelchair accessibility. That renovation, which crucially retained Bunshaft’s central reflecting rectangular pool in the garden, was completed in 1981.

As part of the massive government funding bill currently waiting for Donald Trump’s signature (or veto), Congress approved two new museums in Washington, D.C. The Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act and the National Museum of the American Latino Act would focus attention on women and Latinos in a historical context, highlighting their accomplishments and progress.
There are dozens of women’s history museums scattered across the country in most states and many cities. But none will be as large or as prominent as a women’s museum on or near the National Mall.

The Smithsonian Institution’s administration building, known as the Castle. Congress has authorized the creation of two new museums to be created by the quasi-federal cultural agency.
The 5,500-page spending and relief bill that Congress passed Monday night includes the authorization of two Smithsonian museums — one focused on American Latinos, the other on American women — that pave the way for the world’s largest museum complex to become even more diverse.
The omnibus bill calls on the Smithsonian to begin the lengthy process of creating the National Museum of the American Latino and the American Women’s History Museum by giving the quasi-federal institution permission to hire staff members, collect objects and present programs aimed at telling the stories unique to the groups.

Congress OKs Women's History Museum, American Latinos museum

The Smithsonian Institution can start the process of building two new museums in Washington honoring the history of women and American Latinos after Congress cleared a massive year-end omnibus bill.
Separate bills authorizing both museums passed the House this year as stand-alone measures but were unable to get through the Senate, so they were added to the omnibus to provide for easier passage.
The omnibus measure, passed by Congress on Monday, is a 5,593-page collection of bills, including fiscal 2021 appropriations, coronavirus relief and extraneous measures. The latter included the two bills authorizing the Smithsonian to build a Women’s History Museum and a National Museum of the American Latino.
