Chauvin guilty of murder: Ex-cop convicted in George Floyd death

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo calls for peace, healing
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo expressed hope for the city in a post-verdict statement Tuesday night while asking for “calm, safety and peace in our communities.”
Arradondo, who took the stand at the opening of the second week of witness testimony, telling the jury that Chauvin “absolutely” violated department policy by using his knee on Floyd’s neck, also thanked jurors and expressed his “respect” for the verdict.
Now, he said, is a time for healing.
“We recognize that our community is hurting, and hearts are heavy with many emotions,” Arradondo said in his statement. “However, I have hope. The community that I was born and raised in and that we serve is resilient and, together, we can find our moment to begin to heal.”

George Floyd Square: Ground zero of worldwide reckoning remains heart of movement in Mpls.

Storied 38th Street and Chicago Avenue rests in the heart of south Minneapolis, where a middle-class Black community planted businesses, community centers, and one of the city’s oldest newspapers in the 1930s, and where resident families, once ravaged by the crack epidemic and war on drugs, continue to fight against the forces of gentrification and displacement.
On May 25, 2020, George Perry Floyd Jr. was murdered by the Minneapolis police. His death in the street, beneath an officer’s knee, was recorded by agitated bystanders including local teen Darnella Frazier, whose cellphone video swept the world.
A makeshift George Floyd Av. street sign was posted near the George Floyd memorial at 38th and Chicago Ave. S. in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

relief. Just just relief. There was so much just anxiety and and so much just pressure from what I felt like could be a powder keg type situation and hopefully that is just relieved, now overwhelmed. I'm grateful. I'm relieved. So I'm I feel grounded, I can feel my feet on the concrete. I'm super grateful that this is the verdict and that we can now move to the next case with joy and hope and optimism and strength. So this is a moment. It's an inflection point. It says that justice is possible in America for people of color. This is not only good for me and this community is good for my son. It's good for people who look like me. It is good for people who just want a better society, who want a better community. That's what this is about. The shoving trial shows us that we can have justice. I will give away a lot of many dollars built in his memory. Yeah. Good.

The largely peaceful demonstrations came as cities across the country prepared for possible violence that cropped up sporadically in last year's protests after Floyd's death, a landmark incident that sparked a reckoning in the U.S. over racial inequities and police brutality.
Some cities had already activated the National Guard as the Chauvin verdict loomed; others declared states of emergency.
Chauvin, who is white, was found guilty by a jury on all three charges in the death of Floyd, who is Black. He was convicted of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He could face decades in prison at his sentencing in eight weeks; at a minimum as a first offender, he likely faces 12.5 years. His lawyers are likely to appeal the verdict.
