Art meets nature in new outdoor sculpture made of natural materials at The Brandywine

Art meets nature in new outdoor sculpture made of natural materials at The Brandywine
Inside view of Queen Anne's Lace Pod by Ian Stabler.
CHADDS FORD, PA
.- A whimsical outdoor sculpture has sprung up on the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art's campus grounds for the summer. Now on view through November 7, the Queen Anne's Lace Pod is a temporary, site-specific installation by Virginia-based artist Ian Stabler. Made entirely of natural materials gathered and found onsite, the towering sculptural pod is located in Potts Meadow along the Brandywine's Harvey Run Trail in Chadds Ford, PA.
Stabler was commissioned by the Brandywine River Museum of Art as part of its ongoing sculptural program inviting artists to explore their responses to the local landscape. This is the fifth commissioned project in a series that has included Matthew Jensen’s Alongside Tall Grasses (2014), James Welling’s Gradients (2015), Dylan Gauthier’s highwatermarks (2017), and Kathleen Vance’s Brandywine River (2018).

James Welling: Monograph

ISBN: 9781597112093
Press
James Welling (Aperture) is a sensationally attractive book. It was published to coincide with a large survey exhibition of the artist’s work from the 1970s through 2012 that opened at the Cincinnati Art Museum and traveled to the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, where I caught up with it. The main text by James Crump, is an exemplary account of Welling’s career to date: It proceeds in chronological order, series by series, with unflagging intellegence and critical acumen.
What gives Monograph its special allure are the 250 technically superb illustrations in black-and-white and color, which offer a brilliant tour d’horizon of Welling’s remarkably inventive, multifarious, often lyrically beautiful production. No one persuing this dazzling and substantial book could possibly doubt that Welling ranks among the foremost photographic artits in the world today.–Michael Fried”Artforum” (12/01/2014)

NYT by Brenna Youngblood on artnet Auctions

About This Lot
Contemporary artist Brenna Youngblood’s visual language repurposes iconography of the urban experience to examine the politics of abstraction. Her work across painting, mixed-media collage, installation, photography, and sculpture examines issues of African-American representation and identity, recasting historical narratives in a new light. Born in 1979 in Riverside in California, Youngblood was originally trained as a photographer before expanding her practice. In 2002, the artist graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at California State University in Long Beach and in 2006, she went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts at the University of California in Los Angeles. During this time, she met and studied with the artists such as Catherine Opie, James Welling, and John Baldessari, among others. In 2012, the artist received the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Young Talent Award and in 2015, was awarded the Gwendolyn Knight Prize at the Seattle Art Museum, which supported the solo exhibition

Lately, it’s seemed as if all of Italy’s most talked-about boutique hotels are opening in Puglia, the country’s heel: Palazzo Daniele, Palazzo Luce and, as of next month, Masseria Calderisi. The owners of the latter, Max and Jutta von Braunmühl, had been returning to the region — where the two were married in 2011 — for more than a decade in search of a property. Three years ago, they found, and quickly snapped up, a 17th-century farm estate surrounded by almost 20 acres of gardens and olive groves. The couple, who live with their three

New York's Metro Pictures Gallery to Permanently Close

March 07, 2021 at 6:39pm
New York gallery Metro Pictures announced today that it will close its doors after this year’s programming, ending a historic four-decade run. An email sent by the gallery cited “a demanding year of pandemic-driven programming, and the anticipated arrival of a very different art world.”
The decision marks the latest of many upheavals to an art scene whose landscape, like that of most cities, has been transformed by an ongoing pandemic that has decimated jobs, necessitated digital exhibition models, and shuttered small and midsize art spaces.
Founded in SoHo in 1980 by Helene Winer and Janelle Reiring—then the director of Artists Space and an employee at Leo Castelli Gallery, respectively—Metro Pictures provided an early outpost for the so-called Pictures Generation, a loose affiliation of artists associated with appropriated, often ironized imagery. Among the many artists to have staged significant shows there include Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Jack Goldstein, René Daniëls, Mike Kelley, James Welling, and Cindy Sherman, who has been solely represented by the gallery since its start.
