Decolonization and Communism | Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal

Here is a mission worthy of a new generation.”
-José Carlos Mariátegui, “Anniversary and Balance,”
José Carlos Mariátegui: An
Anthology
June 26, 2021 —
Links International Journal of Socialist Renewal reposted from Orinoco Tribune — While the turn towards analyzing ongoing settler-colonialism has finally reached the mainstream of North American political discussions, there is still a lack of popular understanding of the issues involved. Settler-colonialism is, ironically, understood within the framework of the ways of thinking brought by the European ruling classes to the Americas. By extension, the conceptions of decolonization are similarly limited. Although the transition from analyzing psychological or “discursive” decolonization to analyzing literal, concrete colonization has been extremely important, it requires some clarifications.

New A&S faculty bring Indigenous studies expertise

June 3, 2021
Two new faculty members who specialize in Native American and Indigenous literatures will join the Department of Literatures in English for the fall of 2021.
The hires of Jodi Byrd, currently faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Juliana Hu Pegues, currently faculty at the University of Minnesota, build upon the 2019 addition of Kiowa filmmaker Jeffrey Palmer to Performing and Media Arts in broader efforts to increase faculty diversity, said Derk Pereboom, senior associate dean for arts and humanities and the Susan Linn Sage Professor of Philosophy.
“On a number of fronts, the College of Arts and Sciences is working to advance the cause of Indigenous and Native American studies, and these two hires are a very important part of that vision,” Pereboom said.

When Alice Sparkly Kat, a queer Chinese Brooklyn-based astrologer, started studying the planets in the early 2010s, there were few books about astrology, let alone ones by people of color. Last year, while teaching astrology to Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking elders, she began to receive a lot of questions: Why is the West so central in astrological discussions and study, and what are its limitations? These conversations are what inspired them to write

Circling Eloh: A Meditation

Circling Eloh: A Meditation
First the war, thousands of miles to the east. No. First other, older wars with forgotten names, unhousing and unhoming the Apache Nation. The Arapaho Nation. The Cheyenne Nation. The Pueblo. The Shoshone. The Comanche. The Kiowa. The Navajo. There is a river run red, there is a lake, there is a world on fire who can never be regained. How can we reclaim when name and place are lost? When even ponderosa and lodgepole are uprooted for maple and elm?
There is water. There are a hundred years. There is not enough water. There are fifty years. There is the town of Stout, and then there is not. First the young couples leave for Fort Collins, over the hill, or for Wyoming, forty miles north. Then the families. Then the Bureau of Reclamation comes with letters and phone calls and men in uniforms and there is no choice left but to move. Some bring their homes, some fall into sheds provided five miles to the south.
