On 20 January, one of the US president’s first executive orders was to reverse approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, making good on a campaign promise to kill the project as part of a broader strategy to address the climate crisis.
Environmental groups in Canada have applauded the decision, but the cancellation has left the country’s western provinces in disbelief. ....

The speculative frenzy surrounding BlackBerry and GameStop appears poised to extend into another day, with shares of both jumping again in pre-market trading as the frenzy on Reddit overwhelms Wall Street. Even that social network’s co-founder is getting in on the action. We’ve heard from market professionals, and those who track them closely, that segments of the market are “living in different universes” and that it’s going to “come to a very bad end” for those who are pumping gains entirely detached from fundamentals. But when? And what’s a more conservative retail investor to do? We’ll explore those and other question surrounding this mania today. ....

CALGARY The cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline by U.S. President Joe Biden is a major setback for Canadian Indigenous people, says the leader of a group promoting their participation in oil and gas development as a solution to poverty on reserves.
The decision means fewer jobs in the short term for Indigenous people in constructing the pipeline and supplying goods and services for it, said Dale Swampy, president of the National Coalition of Chiefs. ....
