U.S. cases rose on Christmas Day at the slowest rate in almost two months, though the numbers were likely skewed by the holiday. Hospitalizations in New York City continued to climb, while statewide the total fell slightly, as did new infections. New Jersey has had about as many cases in December as it did from May through October. North Carolina surpassed 500,000 infections over the holiday.
Japan will ban entry to most non-Japanese nationals through the end of January. Global infections surpassed 80 million.
As some European Union nations began vaccinations, Sweden joined France, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland and Japan on a growing list of countries that have identified their first cases of the coronavirus mutation widespread in the U.K. The Canadian province of Ontario said it also identified two cases not apparently tied to travel. ....

San Jose church that refuses to comply with COVID-19 restrictions, still managed to accept relief money


Several pastors made impassioned pleas Friday to keep their churches open to those suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite legal action from Santa Clara County after one church held indoor gatherings in violation of public health orders.
If we each do our part and stay just within our household bubble, we can prevent people from dying, said Santa Clara Public Health Director Dr. Sara Cody.
According to Santa Clara County counsel James Williams, Calvary Chapel San Jose has continued to hold indoor services, without masks, since August - racking up more than $1 million in administrative fines.
It s beyond disappointing, this situation there is shameful, Williams said. ....

Each and every person here, not just the senior pastor, but each and every single person in here says, Hey, this is important enough to me and my faith. And to go out and to know, Hey, I don t think there s a risk here, Glass said.
Glass said he wanted to show support for McClure, even though Glass said he s holding his services in Manteca in a tent outside his church.
McClure already has been slapped with hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines after defying the county s health order by holding indoor services with hundreds in attendance, many of whom were not wearing masks or social distancing. ....

Despite the public health order prohibiting indoor gatherings with other households, a San Jose church is continuing with plans for an indoor Christmas Eve service, according to NBC.
Calvary Chapel San Jose has already racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for holding indoor services, including gatherings without masks or social distancing. While indoor gatherings have been prohibited since Dec. 4, outdoor religious services for up to 100 people are allowed according to the Santa Clara County health order. ....
