TORRS – After a reported seven antisemitic incidents this school year on the campus of the University of Connecticut Storrs – three that occurred during the week of Passover – UConn Hillel last week held “A Solidarity Gathering to Fight Antisemitism.”
The 90-minute gathering, held on UConn’s Student Union Lawn on Monday, April 5, was attended by representatives of the state’s Jewish community, UConn’s president, and UConn student leaders who vowed to be allies with the university’s Jewish population.
The gathering was held in response to three antisemitic acts in October of 2020 and four more incidents that occurred in February and March of 2021.

Connecticut charity Dignity Grows spreading nationwide in mission to fight period poverty

Jessica Zachs of West Hartford founded Dignity Grows almost two years ago to help those experiencing “period poverty” in the Hartford area. Since then, Dignity Grows has grown, to 16 chapters nationwide, with 22 more coming soon. Volunteers in these chapters distribute thousands of free hygiene tote bags to adults and teens whose budgets are stretched too thin to make room for sanitary pads.
The need has heightened as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which saw many jobs lost and many families’ incomes take a nosedive. When money is tight, paying for rent and food takes priority over buying menstrual products. So what are people who need those pads and panty liners supposed to do?

The 25th Annual Mandell JCC Hartford Jewish Film Festival featuring 19 films – all linked to theme of strength and resilience – will open Feb. 28 and run through April 2.
“Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the 2020 film festival to a halt,” says Mandell JCC Executive Director David Jacobs. “Through the strength and resilience of our community, we were determined to carry on and curate a film festival this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary.”
Nine of the festival’s 19 films were scheduled to screen last year but had to be cancelled.

SOUTHBURY – When the board of the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut was searching for a new chief executive officer, Eric Albert immediately thought of Gary Jones.
“As a member of the search committee, I first reached out to Gary to see if he would be interested in speaking with the committee about this position,” said Albert, a past Federation president. “I have known Gary for many years and I consider him to be an extremely thoughtful and creative Jewish professional with extensive knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing the Jewish community. Just as important, he is a mensch who has a great way with people.”
